About The Role

We’re looking for a motivated and experienced individual to join our team as a Grounds Maintenance Supervisor. At Southern Housing, we are committed to providing high-quality, responsive services that create communities where everyone has a safe home in a place they are proud to live. This role plays an important part in maintaining attractive, safe and welcoming outdoor spaces for our residents.

Reporting to the Head of Service, you’ll be responsible for supervising a dedicated grounds maintenance team and helping to deliver a comprehensive, efficient and responsive service. You’ll work closely with colleagues, residents, leaseholders and partners to ensure that scheduled work is completed safely, on time and to a consistently high standard.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

• Supervising and carrying out grounds maintenance activities, including grass cutting, planting, pruning, weeding, leaf clearance and maintaining communal beds.

• Managing, supporting and developing members of the grounds maintenance team, including providing regular supervision, one-to-one meetings, mentoring and performance support.

• Monitoring workloads and team performance to ensure scheduled work is completed within agreed response times, contractual requirements and quality standards.

• Ensuring all work is delivered safely and in line with relevant legislation, regulations, risk assessments, organisational policies and Health and Safety requirements.

• Managing tools, equipment, vehicles, materials and stock effectively to support productivity, value for money and the safe delivery of services.

• Completing digital work orders, reports and other required records accurately and on time, including the use of SOR codes and descriptive works to support accurate costing.

• Communicating professionally with residents and keeping them informed about work, while responding sensitively to customers who may have support needs or be considered vulnerable.

• Identifying service failures, resolving issues at the earliest opportunity and supporting the management and investigation of complaints where required.

You’ll also contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve team performance, productivity, safety, customer satisfaction and value for money. As a visible role model, you’ll promote Southern Housing’s HEART values and create a positive, supportive environment where colleagues can develop and deliver excellent customer service.

This role is both office and site based and will office in Birmingham. There may also be occasions when you are required to support colleagues and teams in other regions.

You’ll be part of the Direct Services team, working together to provide a high-quality and responsive grounds maintenance service for our residents. The team collaborates closely with colleagues and partners to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and with a “can do, first-time fix” approach, while delivering excellent customer satisfaction.

Important information

The successful candidate will need a full UK Category C1 driving licence, and a fleet vehicle will be provided. The appointment will also be subject to a basic DBS check.

What you’ll need

  • Experience of working in a Ground Maintenance environment, with a strong understanding of health and safety practices, including conducting risk assessments, adhering to COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations, managing lone working situations, and prioritising the safety of the team.

  • The ability to build and maintain positive relationships with residents, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and a customer‑centric approach. This includes effectively addressing resident inquiries, concerns, and complaints, and working collaboratively to ensure their needs are met.
