Reports To: Head of Performance
Role Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic intern to join the Performance Department at Southend United as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach. This hands-on internship is a unique opportunity to work closely with the Head of Performance and gain real-world experience in an elite football environment.
The successful candidate will support the planning and delivery of strength and conditioning programs, assist with performance monitoring, and contribute to injury prevention strategies. You’ll play an active role in both training sessions and match days, working with players across all performance levels.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in designing and implementing strength & conditioning sessions
• Set up and support warm-ups for training and match days
• Guide players through gym-based training programs, providing instruction and feedback
• Collect, load, and analyse performance and wellness data from training and matches
• Monitor player progress and flag performance/injury risks
• Support the Head of Performance in daily tasks and projects
What We’re Looking For:
• Studying or recently graduated in Sports Science, Strength & Conditioning, or a related field
• Experience in gym-based strength training and coaching athletes
• Understanding of injury prevention and recovery protocols
• Familiarity with performance monitoring and athlete tracking software (e.g., GPS, wellness data)
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Proactive, reliable, and eager to learn in a team environment
• Relevant S&C certifications (UKSCA, NSCA, or equivalent) – desirable but not essential
Additional Information:
• This is an unpaid internship with fixed training and match day hours, ideal for university students seeking placement or recent graduates looking for hands-on experience in elite sport
