Southampton is well-positioned for economic growth thanks to its transport links, university, and young population. The city aims to attract investment, create jobs, and improve prosperity for its 250,000 residents. The Renaissance Vision is a plan to enhance the city centre's economy, with an important devolution deal expected in the coming months to form a new Combined Authority. This will promote regional growth, making Southampton a centre for maritime, defence, and technology innovation, using resources like universities, the port, and engineering heritage.

The main focus of the team is to create a positive environment for investment and development in the City and to secure competitive advantage for the City, its residents and businesses. The City Development Service is critical to delivery of major projects that benefit the local community and contribute to securing broader economic opportunities for the City.

To play a significant role in developing an environment where Southampton is chosen over other cities as a place to work and reside. Successful design and implementation of a major property investments in the City in general and the City Centre in particular, to sustain and enhance Southampton's position as a regional centre. To lead on a portfolio of major property development projects and to head-up inter-disciplinary (and sometimes cross-organisational) project teams charged with implementing them.

To undertake research and the gathering of background information on behalf of the managers within the team, including land ownership details. To maintain up-to-date programmes for each major project. To prepare and deliver presentations and to provide support at Council and public meetings. To assist with the supervision and management of the programme and resources for development projects from development concept through to facilitating construction on site. This will include: projects implemented directly by the City Council through land ownership; projects in which Southampton City Council is a partner through land ownership; projects of significance to the renaissance of the City in which Southampton City Council is in a facilitating role. To take part in development feasibility, appraisal, implementation, monitoring and evaluation exercises. To assist in implementing controls needed for project and budgetary management. To work with other business units within the City Council in pursuit of general development and regeneration goals.
