Responsibilities

  • Participate in the technical response to policing operations, providing a 24-hour standby service to deploy technical equipment as required.
  • Install surveillance equipment for policing operations, ensuring compliance with Health & Safety standards and manufacturer warranties, safe use of equipment, minimised repair costs, and accurate record‑keeping.
  • Install and maintain temporary alarms for personal/intruder protection and permanent alarms for police buildings, including associated receiving equipment.
  • Maintain and repair technical equipment used by the TSU, design and manufacture equipment for policing operations, and assist in ensuring component and stock levels are adequate for the unit’s needs.
  • Undertake project work and feasibility studies directed by the unit manager, prepare equipment specifications, and advise other force members to ensure suitable equipment and resources are identified.
  • Prepare, issue, and maintain records of equipment held by the force, provide instruction in its use, and ensure all issued equipment is authorised and conforms to good practice and force or national procedures.
  • Work outside normal hours and at short notice when required.
  • Contribute to the development of an effective technical service through liaison with colleagues in the force, external agencies, units, manufacturers, and suppliers.
  • Provide advice on the purchase of equipment.
  • Handle enquiries from external organisations and the force, maintain confidentiality, provide a high level of service, and present evidence in court when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Minimum ONC (or equivalent) qualification in electronics or IT.
  • Extensive workplace experience in audio/visual processing or telecommunications/IT.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate computerised systems and install and maintain technical equipment.
  • Holder of a current and full UK driving licence, with the ability to pass a police force driving test in a police vehicle.
  • Experience preparing detailed technical reports, documentation, and participating in technical presentations.
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety issues.
