As the Force Medical Advisor you will provide medical expertise to the clinical team, be the point of escalation for medical cases and deliver medicals and assessments for pre-employment, attendance management, ill health retirement and complex medical cases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake pre-employment medical assessments of police recruits and police staff applicants who have complex/multiple health conditions which may impact on ability to work as a police officer or other role using home office medical fitness standards and other evidence based/best practice guidance.
  • Undertake medical assessments on eligibility to join the police pension fund, referring where necessary for Selected Medical Practitioner (SMP) assessment.
  • Undertake medical assessments to ascertain fitness for specialist roles involving firearms officers, advanced driving, armed response vehicle operators, HGV, airside driving etc.
  • Support the OH advisors and other members of the clinical team when cases are escalated.
  • Support the Force’s attendance management policy through case management, providing an opinion on fitness for work, advice on short- and long-term adjustments for injured police officers and staff.
  • Provide assessments on ill health retirement for Police Staff (LGPS) and case preparation for Police Officers who are assessed by the SMP process.
  • Work in partnership with key stakeholders to advise on relevant health surveillance programmes in line with health and safety regulations, acting as lead medical advisor and highlighting RIDDOR reportable conditions.
  • Support the OH Clinical Governance Manager in providing medical advice to specialist working groups as and when required.
  • Support the OH Clinical Governance Manager with policy development and process for blood borne viruses, environmental chemicals (fire scenes with asbestos containing materials) and infectious agents (TB or Brucellosis).
  • Support the OH Clinical Governance Manager to implement and maintain safe methods of practice.
  • Act as authorising physician for OH policies and processes, assisting the OH Clinical Governance Manager in the development of these in line with evidence-based practice and other best practice guidelines.

Skills And Experience

  • Member or Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (UK or Ireland).
  • Extensive experience working as an Accredited Specialist or at consultant level.
  • Evidence of consolidation of skills and continuation of medical education in line with the requirements of continued professional development.
  • Full unconditional registration with the General Medical Council with a valid Licence to Practise.
  • Experience of delivery in a customer service environment and knowledge and/or experience of working in policing environment.
  • Sound understanding of the role and implications of clinical governance and experience of policy and guidance development while having evidence of effective team working, supporting other OH professionals.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
