Key Responsibilities

We’re building an exciting new strategy and approach to helping people in South Yorkshire walk, wheel and cycle in their neighbourhoods and to get to jobs and opportunities. We’re recruiting several new roles to the team help us implement our new strategy.

At the heart of our new strategy is a commitment to meaningful community engagement. We’re looking for a passionate and experienced Active Travel Engagement Manager to help bring this vision to life.

You’ll be responsible for developing, managing, and delivering a new approach to engagement that support our strategy, schemes, and campaigns and, where needed, support local authorities on scheme engagement. Working closely with local authorities, public sector bodies, community organisations, and national agencies, you’ll ensure that the voices of those often left out are heard and prioritised.

You’ll lead development of core communications about our work and support our Active Lives Commissioner and Mayor with their involvement in events and communications activities, working closely with the SYMCA communications team. You will develop public-facing campaigns to support more people to choose to travel actively.

This is a unique opportunity to shape how communities across South Yorkshire engage with and benefit from active travel initiatives.

Our new strategy aims to make walking, wheeling and cycling more inclusive and so we especially welcome applications from people whose voices are sometimes least heard in relation to active travel and transport, including women, people with disabilities, people from ethnically diverse communities and people living on low incomes.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Develop and implement a region-wide approach to community and stakeholder engagement which prioritises the voices of those most often left out and left behind
  • Deliver stakeholder mapping and engagement plans aligned with our strategy.
  • Lead on public-facing campaigns to promote walking, wheeling, and cycling.
  • Create and maintain core communication materials including scripts, stories, and media assets.
  • Support the Active Travel Commissioner and Mayor with communications and events.
  • Organise and attend stakeholder and community events, including some evenings and weekends.

About You

  • Proven experience in stakeholder engagement and community outreach.
  • Strong background in communications and campaign delivery.
  • Ability to co-create and deliver impactful messages across various media.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and stakeholders.
  • Understanding of the South Yorkshire region and political landscape.
  • Experience working in a political or public sector environment.
  • Ability to secure resources and funding for engagement activities.
