About the job The holder of this post is responsible to patrol, inspect and maintain all aspects of the track and associated equipment within the Fleet Traincare Depots. You will adhere to track work instructions, safe system of work plans, all depot safety procedures, rules, and regulations in force including NR9934 Working Near or Adjacent to a DC Conductor Rail (DCCR). You will ensure safe systems of works plans are in place for each task and make sure staff they are fully briefed when carrying out the duties of a COSS.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Carry out track patrols as directed by MB3 Track Supervisor.
  • Carry out inspections as directed i.e., Points box etc.
  • Carry out repairs and any remedial work identified in accordance with NR/L2/TRK/001 Standard.
  • Work to laid down specifications.
  • Comply with p/way work instructions, safe system of work plans, all depot safety procedures, rules, and regulations in force including NR9934 Working Near or Adjacent to a DC Conductor Rail (DCCR).
  • Adhere to all p/way work instructions.
  • Report any defects found on the track or infrastructure whilst carrying out duties.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork including patrol sheets.
  • Carry out vegetation clearance as directed.
  • Work to be undertaken in a safe manner.
  • Carryout winter precautions within the depots as per local instructions.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ensure you have and wear the correct PPE for each task you do in accordance with p-way work instructions, safety instructions and risk assessments.
  • Ensure safe systems of works are in place and staff are fully briefed on the protection arrangements when carrying out the duties of a COSS.
  • Ensure that all tools are in good condition / powered tools are within their service dates prior to use.
  • Ensure good housekeeping in all working areas.

Training & Qualifications: At SWR we believe in providing our staff with the best tools and training in order to carry out tasks to the best of their ability. Upon joining, you will attend practical courses at our training centre in Basingstoke where you will attain recognisable qualifications and information in the following areas:

  • Depot operating procedures and safety requirements.
  • Personal Track Safety DC Electrified Lines.
  • Passed out in Rules and Regulations as required.
  • Successful completion of training relevant to the job COSS Look Out.
  • Small Tools trained.

About the location Clapham Depot is an extremely busy location situated in the middle of Clapham Junction Station that provides a service 24/7. Clapham, due to its location, sees all the rolling stock that SWR run on a daily basis. We have a large and diverse team who undertake various roles to ensure that we meet our customer service levels and expectations in train reliability, safety, performance and train cleanliness. Clapham is an excellent location to learn and understand different aspects of the Railway and is a fantastic starting point for people wanting to learn about the operational side of the Rail industry. It could also be suited to those seeking a new and more demanding challenge. Some of roles include; shunting, panel operators, depot driving, response technicians, train cleaners and permanent way.

Working pattern Working an average of 37 hours per week over 5 days Monday - Friday, 07:00 - 15:00.
