Job overview

We are seeking a committed and enthusiastic Specialist Grade Psychiatrist to join our CAMHS team in Sutton, a leafy suburb of South West London. The postholder will work with a senior CAMHS Consultant and other experienced Mental Health Clinicians within the Service. This is a full time, 10PA substantive post. However, part time working can be negotiated. This is a new post due to configuration of services. To be eligible for this post, candidates must have a minimum of 12 years clinical experience, including 6 years in Psychiatry.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy, mature service to provide both medical and psychological treatment for individuals and families with severe mental health needs. There will also be opportunities for the post holder to lead on service development with the Consultant and senior leadership team. The candidate can take up a special interest and/or take an active role in teaching. The post is within a multidisciplinary team providing a community service and has close links with local authority, education and the wider borough structure. The post holder will be joining a skilled, motivated, and innovative multidisciplinary team committed to continual learning and development and will be offered excellent CPD opportunities.

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Directorate of Southwest London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust is a well-established provider of mental health services to the boroughs of Richmond, Sutton, Kingston, Merton and Wandsworth. The local Sutton CAMHS team is highly specialist comprising of family therapy, psychology, risk management nurses and DBT specialist. The team has access to trust wide services such as the DBT group program, eating disorder service, emergency services covering the 3 acute hospitals served by the Trust and a Learning Disability Service together with the National CAMHS Deaf Service and a Neurodevelopmental Team. The Trust is committed to the development of career pathways for Specialty Doctors and applicants can be supported through CESR process if they wish.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will be responsible to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services Clinical Director of SW London St George’s Mental Health Trust. If you are a dynamic and established Specialist Psychiatrist, fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice as well as holding S12 approval under the Mental Health Act or you are a Specialty Doctor within six – nine months of being eligible for this grade, we would be delighted to hear from you. To be eligible for this Specialist Grade role, it is a requirement that you have a minimum 12 years clinical experience 6 of which must be in Psychiatry.

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCPsych (or equivalent)
  • Paper A and B Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Additional clinical qualifications
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment
  • Approved under S12 or able to achieve within 6 months of appointment
  • Minimum 12 years’ experience post qualification and at least 6 of those in the specialty (psychiatry) with at least 2 year in CAMHS
  • Clinical knowledge
  • Excellent clinical skills in the assessment and management of complex mental health conditions in children and adolescents
  • Training and experience in working with systems and agencies to support children and adolescents mental health
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Excellent knowledge in speciality
  • Knowledge and experience in psychopharmacology as applicable to CAMHS
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
  • Experience in a variety of therapies
  • Academic skills and lifelong learning
  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills or willing to undertake training to improve this
