Overview

South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust is seeking Bank Neonatal Nurse positions (Neonatal Junior Sister Band 6). The closing date is 26 September 2025.

Neonatal Junior Sister Band 6 Bank positions available. We are a level 1 unit with 11 cots; about 3,000 babies are born each year at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, with 350–400 admitted to SCBU. We deliver family integrated care and expect you to demonstrate this in your practice. Main duties of the job

To lead and coordinate the team to maintain and deliver a high standard of family integrated care to all babies and their families in accordance with the ward philosophy. To ensure maintenance of quality services and operational systems at all times and deputise the Ward Manager in their absence.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Promote a baby focused, family centred ward environment at all times.
  • Promote family involvement in care planning, ensuring parents and carers are kept informed of treatment and progress, with necessary family education.
  • Sound knowledge of local and national Child Protection procedures.
  • Provide clinical leadership for ward teams to facilitate high-standard, evidence-based, individualised nursing care from admission to discharge.
  • Provide clinical leadership for the care of high dependency and intensive care babies during the acute phase and when stabilised.
  • Liaise with other Neonatal centres and community teams to provide effective shared care as required.
  • Act as a resource providing clinical information for other areas throughout the organisation where children are treated.
  • Act as advocate for all inpatient babies and ward attendees.
  • Act as key worker to provide specific expertise and leadership in identified areas.
  • Provide telephone advice for parents requesting information and support.
  • Contribute to planning, monitoring and control of ward resources, helping to keep expenditure within budgets.
  • Assist the Ward Manager to optimise nursing resources by even distribution of staff annual leave and matching skill mix to workload.
  • Provide information and advice for action towards achieving organisational objectives.
  • Attend ward, divisional and corporate meetings as required to disseminate information up and down the management structure.
  • Assist the Ward Manager to collect and organise ward information for inclusion in the divisional service plan.
  • Contribute to recruitment and selection of quality staff and identify future requirements to complement the Ward teams.
  • Contribute to planning, organisation and evaluation of work, ensuring effective induction of new staff including preceptorship for newly qualified nurses and mentorship for student nurses.
  • Maintain productive working relationships and inform the ward manager of unresolved or potential problems.
  • Manage neonatal bed related issues, liaising with the Maternity department and other Neonatal units as necessary.
  • Knowledge of current NHS priorities.

Education & Development

  • Attend annual IPR and complete a personal development plan with agreed learning objectives.
  • Responsible for own personal and professional development and assist the Ward Manager in developing junior staff.
  • Attend relevant internal and external training days in accordance with ward training plan.
  • Contribute to the development of teams and individuals to enhance performance.
  • Facilitate staff development to achieve ward objectives using IPR and PDP; monitor performance and report progress to the Ward Manager.
  • Maintain up-to-date nursing practice that is evidence-based and cost-effective.

Clinical Governance

  • Ensure National and Safeguarding Children guidelines are adhered to at all times.
  • Investigate complaints and incidents following Trust policies, provide statements, and support improvements to prevent recurrence.
  • Undertake audits to facilitate maintenance and improvement of patient care.
  • Review ward nursing documentation and neonatal policies regularly, ensuring they are evidence-based.
  • Maintain services to meet contract and quality standards, take corrective actions, and inform the ward manager of unresolved problems.
  • Ensure staff compliance with Trust policies; provide counseling as appropriate and escalate to the Ward Manager as needed.
  • Ensure own professional registration and assist in ensuring all qualified nurses have valid NMC registration and DBS clearance.
  • Ensure Health and Safety guidelines are adhered to within the ward.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Diploma / Degree in Professional Nursing studies; NMC registered
  • Evidence of continuing professional development; NLS every 4 years
  • IT skills and knowledge of Lorenzo

Experience

  • 2 years’ recent experience in Neonatal care
