The Medical Assistant is responsible for supporting the practice with overall responsibility for maintaining efficiency of patient flow. Clinical duties include but are not limited to maintaining universal precautions; rooming patients, taking necessary vital signs and measurements, performing phlebotomy as needed, administering vaccines, performing treatments and procedures as ordered by the provider. He/She will be responsible for answering practice education, counseling and performing various testing and screenings. The Medical Assistant will also be responsible for maintaining patients’ rooms, setting up and stocking, as appropriate as well as ordering and tracking supplies for the practice.
Administrative responsibilities will include, without limitation, all generally accepted office responsibilities, making appointments, filing, answering phones, preparing correspondence, preparing patient charts, obtaining referrals and paperwork from referring physician offices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintain patient’s safe passage in and out of the practice
- Greet, assess and interview patients
- Obtain past medical and surgical history, family history, social history, vital signs
- Review present medications, allergy, history, chief complaint, and brief interrogation of complaint
- Act as a liaison between doctor and patient
- Explain medication, side effects, treatments, diets, diseases and disease processes
- Update medication list and current problem list
- Prepare and assist patients for examination, treatment, or procedure by medical staff
- Anticipate needs of patients, providers, and other team members
- Monitor patients during examination or procedure
- Maintain and update level of skill for pertinent medical assistant duties
- Stock supplies as needed, and maintain clean exam rooms
- Respond to patient’s concerns
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Participate in training and skills development of new medical assistants
- Perform a variety of preliminary procedures, including phlebotomy, injections, throat cultures, nasal swabs and more.
- Analyse samples with various point-of-care testing platforms
- Prepare and package laboratory samples for transport to lab
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills, check patients in and out for appointments utilizing our electronic internal practice management system.
- Confirm patient information at the time of check in.
- Complete / confirm insurance eligibility.
- Answer front desk phone calls.
- Provide receptionist back-up / support while being able to explain financial requirements to the patient(s) or responsible parties and collect co-pays and past due balances as required.
- Ensure Worker’s Compensation, MVA and Occupational Health paperwork is completed for visits.
- Maintain optimum customer service and patient confidentiality.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Medical Assistant Certification preferred or Emergency Medical Technician License
- Externship/Internship within related healthcare practice preferred.
- Must have current or very recent experience phlebotomy skills.
- Hours may vary depending on the needs of the urgent care including weekends and holidays; flexibility required.
License/Registration/Certification Requirements:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification - American Heart Association (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification - American Heart Association (AHA)
- Emergency Medical Services Advanced EMT - Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH)
- Valid Driver’s License - Various
