The predicted salary is between 24309 - 28415 £ per year.
Salary Band - Band A - £24,309 increasing to Band C £28,415 once qualified and whilst driving a HGV. We have a fantastic opportunity to join our Operations Team and be trained (fully funded) to be a fully qualified Heavy Good Vehicle Driver and then join our new Domestic Food Waste service. This opportunity will be subject to a Learning Contract and we will be looking for you to develop the required skills to be an HGV driver within a 3-6-month period (subject to DVLA test availability).
This will involve developing the skills required for a professional driver, attaining a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), developing knowledge of how to supervise a crew, working as part of a team and contributing to the delivery of the service to provide excellent customer service. Whilst you wait to undertake the various aspects of driver training you will be part of a team to undertake waste collection activities across all waste streams. This will be in accordance with the methods and safe systems of work laid down by the Council.
The role will involve:
- Collect and dispose of waste following Council-approved methods and arrangements.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team to deliver high-quality services required by the Councils.
- Comply with health and safety standards to ensure waste collection is completed without impacting the public.
When you pass all the requirements for your HGV Licence and CPC card full training will be conducted to:
- Meet all transport management and depot safety requirements.
- Act as supervisor to the designated crew during rounds.
- Maintain professionalism and positive customer interactions.
- Operate In-Cab technology for feedback and required administration tasks.
- Collect missed and illegally tipped refuse as directed.
- Take full responsibility for your vehicle, including checks and fault reporting.
- Work as a team to meet service standards, targets, and improve continuously.
About You
You must have a full (Category B) driving licence (for 2 years or more) with no more than 3 penalty points on your license, you will need to apply for your provisional HGV licence and pass the DVLA Theory and Hazard Perception tests. You will also need to meet the medical and eyesight requirements mandated by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). This will be conducted as part of the onboarding process and must be passed to secure the role.
You will need to study and undertake training to pass the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) modules 2 and 4 and work to meet the health and safety requirements of the role, including assisting vehicle drivers in the safe manoeuvring of vehicles where appropriate. When not allocated to a collection crew, you will carry out other duties within the operations service.
You will need to be physically fit with the ability to walk extended distances, as well as undertake repetitive manual lifting. You will be able to follow procedures and accept direction and be able to work in a professional, competent and positive way with customers. The role will require some flexibility in terms of working early mornings/late afternoons and some weekends where required, particularly following a bank holiday or a period of inclement weather for example.
You will be operating in a safety critical role where your safety is paramount, the Council has a zero-tolerance policy to taking illegal substances. This role will be subject to random Drugs and Alcohol testing.
