As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, you will join our Education team in helping to provide high quality education to children and young people in their own homes. Linking the work of online teaching staff, you will contribute to the learning, development and welfare of these pupils.

South Gloucestershire Council have a statutory responsibility for delivering education to pupils who are unable to attend their main school due to medical ill health or to those that may have complex and often challenging needs. In these cases, the support is delivered to the pupil in their own home.

What you will be doing

  • You will visit children and young people in their own homes to support them with their online learning.
  • It will be your responsibility to liaise with the child or young person’s school to support with reintegration.
  • As required, you will submit reports to the Councils Medical Need Panel, so they are kept up to date on individual progress and readiness for reintegration.
  • Supporting with any issues or requirements, you will be a key link between the family, the council and the child/young person’s school.

What we need from you

  • We require you to hold an NVQ 2 or equivalent in English and maths, alongside an NVQ 3 teaching assistant qualification or equivalent qualification.
  • Given the elements of this role, you must have previous experience working alongside children and young people with learning and behavioural problems, including autistic children or children with physical disabilities.
  • As you will be working with both adults and young people, sometimes in challenging situations, you need to have good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • You will have good IT skills, including experience of using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and be able to format documents, such as learning materials, to a high standard.

What you need to know

  • This is a limited term contract, ending 31st July 2026.
  • This role is hybrid, with a mixture of working at our office in Yate and working from home, as well as making home visits.
  • Please note that due to the nature of this role, it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained.
  • You will be expected to travel throughout the authority and surrounding area so you must have a full, valid driving licence with regular access to a vehicle or have an alternative means of travel.
  • We are also offering this as an internal secondment opportunity; you should first seek your line manager's permission before applying.
  • Interviews will be held on 13th March 2026.
