  • You will learn how to ensure designs comply with relevant legislation and guidance, contribute to public consultations and assist in preparing legal orders to help deliver successful projects.
  • As part of the Assess and Decide team, you will help investigate requests for highway improvements from residents and stakeholders, involving collecting and analysing data, assessing proposals against council priorities and policies, and supporting the development of practical, cost-effective solutions that meet local needs.
  • You will gain hands-on experience in the design and delivery of highway and transport projects, initially supporting experienced colleagues before progressing to managing elements of your own projects as your skills and confidence grow.
  • With opportunities to assist with the assessment and development of highway improvements, you will produce outline designs and recommendations while learning how to apply engineering standards, technical guidance and legal requirements.
  • Using industry-standard software, including AutoCAD and GIS (Geographic Information System), you will develop the skills needed to create engineering drawings, maps and technical information to support team members in the design or investigation of schemes.
  • You will build your digital and professional skills by producing reports, project documents and communicating technical information to a varied audience, while becoming proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook.
  • Throughout your apprenticeship, you will work with a variety of stakeholders, both within and outside the council, including residents, local businesses, politicians and partner organisations, helping you develop strong communication, consultation and relationship-building skills.
