We are seeking a Higher Education Lecturer in Costume Construction, specialising in pattern cutting, to join our dynamic team. This is a unique opportunity to teach within an HE environment that works closely with our world renowned partner, the Royal Ballet and Opera. Alongside our degree programmes, you will also play a key role in supporting our specialist apprenticeship pathway delivered in collaboration with the Royal Ballet and Opera. This partnership offers learners unparalleled access to industry insight, professional workflows, and real world costume environments. Your expertise will help prepare students and apprentices for the demands of high level professional practice across theatre, dance, opera, film, TV, and live performance.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging, industry informed teaching across HE Costume programmes, with a focus on both traditional and contemporary pattern cutting techniques.
  • Support learners through hands on construction projects, fittings, portfolio development, and collaborative productions.
  • Contribute to curriculum development that reflects current industry expectations and emerging practices.
  • Actively engage with and contribute to our partnership work with the Royal Ballet and Opera, including supporting the apprenticeship provision. This may involve facilitating specialist workshops, guiding apprentices through applied learning tasks, and helping them gain deep insight into professional standards and industry excellence.

Qualifications

  • Has strong industry experience in costume construction and advanced pattern cutting.
  • Brings creativity, enthusiasm, and a collaborative mindset to our vibrant department.
  • Is committed to inclusive, student centred teaching and supporting learners to achieve their potential.
  • (Ideally) holds a teaching qualification, or is willing to work towards one.
