Role Description

The Teacher in Catering role is a full-time, on-site position based in the United Kingdom at one of South Essex College's campuses. The role involves planning, delivering, and assessing practical and theoretical catering lessons that align with curriculum requirements and industry standards. Day-to-day activities include preparing schemes of work, creating lesson plans and learning materials, demonstrating professional cooking techniques, and supervising learners in kitchen and classroom environments. The teacher will monitor learner progress, provide constructive feedback, maintain accurate records, and contribute to quality assurance processes. Additional responsibilities include supporting learner employability, collaborating with colleagues on course development, promoting safe working practices, and participating in meetings, events, and continuous professional development.

Qualifications

  • Relevant catering qualification (e.g., NVQ, Diploma, or degree in Catering, Hospitality, or Culinary Arts) and up-to-date industry experience.
  • Teaching qualification or willingness to work towards one (e.g., PGCE, CertEd, or equivalent) and experience delivering vocational or further education courses.
  • Strong practical culinary skills, including food preparation, cooking techniques, menu planning, and kitchen management.
  • Knowledge of food safety, hygiene regulations, and health and safety practices within a professional kitchen environment.
  • Effective classroom management and ability to support diverse learners, including those with varying abilities and backgrounds.
  • Good communication, organization, and time-management skills, with the ability to produce clear lesson plans and assess learner work accurately.
  • Competence in using digital tools and learning technologies for teaching, assessment, and record-keeping.
  • Commitment to inclusive education, safeguarding, equality, diversity, and continuous professional development.
