Working for Southend on Sea City Council offers a challenging and rewarding career in local government within a collaborative and innovative environment, with the benefit of flexible working practices to support a positive work-life balance.

Your new role

Join our team and help young people thrive through music. Music on Sea (MOS) is passionate about providing inspiring musical opportunities for children and young people across Southend-on-Sea. We are looking for a welcoming, organised and proactive Community Music Support Assistant (CMSA) to support the smooth running of our community music centres and help create a positive experience for children, families and tutors. This contract is offered on a part-time (5 hours a week) and permanent basis.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role at the heart of our music provision, ensuring sessions run safely and efficiently while providing excellent support to families and young musicians.

As a Community Music Support Assistant, you will be the first point of contact for children, parents and visitors attending our community music centres. You will provide on-site administrative support, maintain attendance records, support safeguarding processes and help ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.

  • Welcoming families, managing sign-in and sign-out procedures, processing registers and attendance information.
  • Coordinating children during non-teaching periods and sharing important information from the central Music on Sea team.
  • Supporting tutors with venue arrangements, health and safety procedures, fire evacuations and the safe dismissal of children at the end of sessions.

The role includes supporting performances and events throughout the year and working closely with tutors, families and colleagues to ensure the highest standard of service delivery.

Working Pattern

This role is currently scheduled for approximately 5 hours per week during term time, with sessions taking place at:

  • Monday: Southend Music Centre (currently Southend High School for Boys), 4:10pm to 6:40pm
  • Saturday: Southend Academy of Music (currently Earls Hall Primary School), 9:10am to 12:10pm

Venue locations and session times may change with at least one term's notice. There may also be opportunities for additional paid hours to support performances and events throughout the year.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you will be an organised and approachable individual with excellent communication and customer service skills. Previous experience of working with schools, children or families would be advantageous, alongside a genuine commitment to providing a positive and safe environment for young people.

It is essential that you are confident in using Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Outlook, Word and Excel, and able to maintain accurate records and data. Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks are essential. We are looking for someone who can build positive relationships with children, families and colleagues, adapts well to changing priorities and demonstrates professionalism, integrity and teamwork in everything they do.

What you'll get in return

When joining the council, you can enjoy a range of benefits including: 25 days annual leave, flexible working and excellent training and development opportunities. They are committed to ensuring that you are supported in this varied and challenging role with the appropriate level of training.
