Medical Director – Staff Specialist Hospital in the Home (HiTH) – Based at Newcastle Community Health Services, Hunter St, Newcastle NSW Permanent part time 0.5 FTE (20hrs/wk)
We seek an enthusiastic Emergency Medicine Specialist (FACEM) or Specialist Physician (FRACP) to take on a 0.5 FTE Staff Specialist in Hospital in the Home with a view to taking over the position of Medical Director in the second half of 2026.
About the role:
- The Medical Director provides clinical leadership and strategic direction for the Adult HiTH Services, ensuring high-quality, safe and efficient patient care in the home and through Virtual Care.
- Provide leadership to the HiTH Service in conjunction with the HiTH Nurse Manager, and provide medical and clinical oversight of the delivery, quality and efficiency of HiTH Services, with a focus on quality and safety.
- Provide care to General Medical patients mainly focusing on heart failure, COPD, some acute infections such as cellulitis, and warfarin initiation/recommencement.
- Work with a multidisciplinary team, including a CMO, JMO, Registered Nurses and Allied Health staff.
- Work with Emergency Department Physicians and admitting Medical Officers to identify appropriate patients for transfer or admission to Hospital in the Home (HITH) Services.
- Provide clinical leadership and governance to the HiTH Staff Specialists for the four adult HiTH services.
- In collaboration with Hospital DSMs, develop a clinical service plan to address the increasing demand for HiTH services throughout HNELHD.
Essential Requirements:
- Registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist (Medical FRACP / Acute Care FACEM, or other relevant specialty).
- Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership of acute/post-acute care services delivery and the ability to work effectively as a clinical leader within a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and nurture internal and external relationships through highly developed interpersonal, negotiation, written and verbal communication skills.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
- A strong ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary environment.
- Knowledge of healthcare policies, regulations, and best practices pertinent to the HITH setting.
