At South East Water, we don’t just move water; we navigate a complex web of 11 different Local Highway Authorities. We are looking for a Highways Compliance Officer, if you’re a problem-solver who thrives on variety—balancing technical consultancy with real-world site auditing—this is the role for you. This isn’t a desk-bound job. You are the vital link between our strategic projects and the public highway. You’ll be out on-site at least once a week, ensuring that everything from emergency repairs to major main replacements is safe, compliant, and clever.

Main Responsibilities:

  • The Internal Consultant: Providing technical guidance to Project Managers and contractors to ensure works are coordinated smoothly and safely.
  • The Site Auditor: Getting out on the road to conduct safety audits and monitor permits, identifying trends that help us get better every day.
  • The Relationship Builder: Acting as the face of the company with Highway Authorities and HAUC, ensuring South East Water maintains a stellar reputation.
  • The Compliance Expert: Keeping us ahead of the curve on the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) and the Traffic Management Act (TMA).

About You:

We are a small team, so your attitude matters as much as your technical knowledge. We need someone who is self-motivated and ready to put forward fresh ideas and initiatives.

  • Experience: You’ve worked in a street works or highways environment and know your way around Permit and Lane Rental schemes.
  • The “Eye”: You have a keen eye for detail and a knack for spotting safety or compliance issues before they become problems.
  • Communication: You can break down complex legislation into clear, actionable advice for contractors and internal teams alike.
  • Resilience: You’re highly organised and can juggle multiple priorities without losing your positive outlook.

Why Join Us?

You’ll have the autonomy to manage your own site visits and the influence to drive continuous improvement across the business. We value a fresh perspective—if you see a better way to do things, we want to hear it. We want to be the water company people want to be supplied by and want to work for. We know the communities we serve are diverse. We recognise creativity comes from diversity not similarity. That’s why we are enthusiastic about creating inclusion across age, race, gender, ethnicity, religion and identity. You will experience our dedication to equal opportunities and fair treatment for all: through your recruitment, employment and career progression with South East Water.

Benefits package:

  • Excellent Stakeholder pension scheme, up to 10% employer contribution.
  • 5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays per annum, increasing to 6 weeks with length of service.
  • Flexible annual leave policy to buy or sell holiday leave.
  • Paid volunteering days.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Health cash plan.
  • Life assurance.
  • Wellbeing related benefits.
