About the role: Senior Peer Support Worker in Lewisham. Provide person‐centred, recovery‐focused peer support on wards and after discharge up to 12 weeks. Line manage a Peer Support Worker.

Job responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Peer Support In‐Reach Service Manager and Peer Support Worker to provide recovery‐oriented individual support to a caseload of clients, in accordance with their support plans.
  • Support patients on the wards and for 12 weeks after discharge, helping them build skills and develop independence.
  • Respond to developing support needs in a timely manner, providing flexible practical and emotional support.
  • Support clients to represent their views and interests to other professionals and signpost to advocacy services where appropriate.
  • Report any concerns or safeguarding issues related to clients' wellbeing to the Unit and Peer Support In‐Reach Service Manager.
  • Provide line management to the Peer Support Worker, including regular supervision, annual appraisals and development opportunities.
  • Ensure contract targets are achieved and that clear action plans are developed and implemented to address areas of under‐performance.
  • Promote understanding and practice of peer support principles.
  • Ensure excellent communication and liaison with colleagues within Oxleas, Southwest London St. George's and SLaM NHS Foundation Trusts.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of peer support in managing the mental wellbeing of clients, using outcome measurement tools and implementing best practice changes.
  • Keep accurate records using relevant software and databases, contributing to evaluation of service effectiveness.
  • Cover for Peer Support Workers or Peer Support In‐Reach Manager as needed.
  • Liaise with the In‐Reach Service Manager on developments and progress.

Person Specification – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Competent in English and Maths.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with ability to present information clearly and organisational/administrative and IT skills.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality, consent and information sharing.
  • Aware of risk, safeguarding and timely reporting.
  • Aware of lone working issues and maintaining personal and professional boundaries.
  • Ability to develop effective and trusting relationships, respectful and non‐judgemental.
  • Ability to liaise effectively with other services and professionals, forming peer relationships with patients and carers.
  • Ability to help the person find solutions in a non‐directive manner.
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and ability to raise awareness of anti‐discrimination and stigma.
  • Ability to work from a recovery‐focused and person‐centred approach.
  • Knowledge of building community links.
  • Ability to work independently and conduct lone visits when safe.
  • Knowledge of health and social care services including the benefits system.

Experience:

  • Previous peer support experience and/or working in a team environment.
  • Experience of line managing/supporting peers or having managerial responsibilities.
  • Personal lived experience of mental health difficulties and knowledge of services.
  • Willingness to share your own life experiences with patients, carers and colleagues.
  • Knowledge or experience of peer support approaches and asset/strengths-based care and support systems.

Salary: £22,785 a year (based on a full‐time salary of £32,863).
