To undertake comprehensive quality control, compliance and fleet readiness inspections across South Central Fleet Services' Vehicle Conversion Unit (VCU), ensuring all vehicles, equipment installations and conversion activities meet NHS, Trust, statutory, manufacturer and Blue Light operational standards.

The post holder will be responsible for conducting detailed vehicle quality inspections, acceptance checks, fleet onboarding and offboarding activities, compliance audits and operational readiness assessments to ensure all vehicles are safe, legally compliant, fit for purpose and fully prepared for frontline service. The role acts as an independent quality assurance function, maintaining rigorous inspection standards and supporting continuous improvement across SCFS operations. The post holder will demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, a proactive approach to defect identification and a commitment to quality, safety and operational excellence.

Main duties of the job

  • Conduct quality inspections of ambulance and fleet vehicles following maintenance, repair, conversion and equipment installation.
  • Complete final acceptance, pre-delivery and operational readiness inspections, ensuring compliance with NHS, Trust, manufacturer and legislative requirements.
  • Identify, document and ensure rectification of defects, non-conformances and workmanship issues before vehicle release.
  • Support fleet onboarding and offboarding through condition inspections, asset verification, equipment audits and documentation checks.
  • Ensure vehicles are safe, compliant and fully equipped for operational use.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records, quality reports and compliance documentation using the JAAMA Key2 Fleet Management System.
  • Monitor recurring defects, report quality trends and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work closely with Engineers, Technicians, Managers and operational teams to resolve quality concerns and support vehicle release.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety legislation, Trust policies and safe working practices, promoting a culture of quality, compliance and accountability.

Person specification

  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to identify minor defects, omissions and quality concerns.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle systems, components and engineering principles.
  • Good understanding of fleet compliance, roadworthiness and vehicle safety standards.
  • Ability to interpret technical specifications, engineering instructions and inspection standards.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of computer literacy including Microsoft Office applications and fleet management systems.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining consistent inspection standards.
  • Professional, methodical and quality-focused approach to work.
  • Knowledge of NHS Fleet Standards and Emergency Services fleet operations.
  • Understanding of DVSA roadworthiness requirements and fleet compliance obligations.
  • Knowledge of Blue Light vehicle conversions, emergency warning equipment and specialist fleet installations.
  • Understanding of quality management systems, auditing and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Knowledge of fleet lifecycle management, asset governance and operational fleet readiness.
