Job Purpose
The Waste Chemist is responsible for the safe classification, assessment, handling, and processing of chemical waste streams in compliance with UK environmental legislation. The role supports efficient waste management operations while ensuring regulatory compliance, safety, and environmental protection.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, classify, and characterise incoming chemical waste streams in line with UK regulations (including Hazardous Waste Regulations, Environmental Permitting Regulations, and Duty of Care).
- Conduct laboratory analysis to determine waste composition, compatibility, and appropriate treatment or disposal routes.
- Ensure accurate completion and review of waste documentation, including consignment notes, SDS, and internal records.
- Support site operations by providing technical guidance on waste segregation, storage, treatment, and disposal.
- Maintain compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards, including COSHH and REACH requirements.
- Liaise with customers, transporters, and regulators as required on technical and compliance matters.
- Assist with audits, inspections, and regulatory reporting.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including waste minimisation and process optimisation.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure good laboratory practice (GLP) is followed at all times.
- Support incident investigations and implement corrective actions where necessary.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline.
- 2 years experience working with chemical or hazardous waste, ideally within a waste management or chemical manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of UK environmental and hazardous waste legislation.
- Ability to accurately assess chemical hazards and compatibility.
Desirable:
- Experience in laboratory-based chemical analysis.
- Familiarity with EA permitting and compliance inspections.
- Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RSC) or working towards chartership.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong commitment to safety and environmental responsibility.
Working Conditions
