An opportunity to play a key role within a growing automotive engineering business, working with some of the world's leading vehicle manufacturers. We are looking for an experienced vehicle diagnostics professional to join the team in a senior, hands-on role; providing specialist automotive engineering, testing, diagnostic and vehicle certification services to OEM customers, alongside expertise across conventional, hybrid and electric vehicle technologies.
This is not primarily a desk-based electronics engineering position; we're looking for someone who understands vehicles because they've actually worked on them. You could be a Vehicle Diagnostic Technician, Master Technician, Diagnostic Engineer, Senior Vehicle Technician, Workshop Supervisor, Technical Specialist or similar, ideally with experience gained within an OEM, automotive manufacturing plant, Tier 1 supplier, dealer/retailer or other technically demanding automotive environment.
The Role
- You'll combine hands-on vehicle diagnostics, technical investigation, testing and engineering support, while taking increasing responsibility for projects, customers and team members.
- Vehicle diagnostic testing, fault-finding and root-cause investigation.
- Working with diagnostic equipment and vehicle electrical/electronic systems.
- Practical vehicle testing, validation and certification activities.
- Supporting diagnostic development, tooling and engineering projects.
- Analysing vehicle and diagnostic information and producing technical reports.
- Working with customers, suppliers and internal engineering teams to resolve technical issues.
- Mentoring engineers and technicians and helping develop engineering capability.
- Taking increasing responsibility for projects, people and customer relationships.
- Occasional travel to other ATC sites, customer locations in the UK and potentially internationally.
What We're Looking For
- Substantial practical automotive experience and a proven track record.
- Strong vehicle diagnostics and fault-finding experience.
- Good practical understanding of vehicle mechanical systems.
- Hands-on experience working on vehicles: engines, brakes, components, tools and test equipment.
- Experience using diagnostic equipment and electrical test equipment such as a multimeter.
- OEM, automotive manufacturing, Tier 1, dealership or similar experience.
- Good electrical/electronic understanding alongside mechanical knowledge.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate an issue and work out what is actually happening.
- Previous leadership experience as a Team Leader, Supervisor, Manager, Senior Technician or Technical Lead, or relevant management/leadership qualifications.
- A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel.
- A degree in Automotive, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline would be advantageous, as would qualifications such as ILM; however, qualifications aren't the deciding factor.
- Proven ability, practical experience and the right attitude are most important.
- Knowledge of areas such as CAN/CAN FD/LIN, UDS/DoIP, vehicle electrical architectures, EV/hybrid systems, high-voltage systems, diagnostic development or tools such as Vector CANoe/CANalyzer would be beneficial, but don't expect to tick every box.
The Person
This is perhaps the most important part of the role. We're looking for someone who 'does' rather than 'just talks'. Someone who can be presented with a difficult vehicle fault and will get to the bottom of it. Someone happy picking up a tool, connecting test equipment, getting hands-on with a vehicle and working through a problem but equally capable of sitting down with a customer, explaining the issue clearly and taking responsibility for resolving it. You'll need to be comfortable working under pressure, adapting when priorities change and taking ownership when something needs doing.
We're not specifically looking for a newly qualified graduate. The business already has plenty of highly qualified people. We're looking for someone who brings years of genuine automotive experience, practical knowledge, judgement and credibility, together with the ambition and leadership ability to develop into an increasingly senior member of the business.
Salary & Hours
- Salary: Up to £45,000 depending on experience.
- Location: Llanelli, South Wales.
- Working hours: Monday-Thursday 8:30am-5:00pm; Friday 9:00am-3:00pm.
- The role is predominantly Llanelli-based, five days per week, with occasional travel to customer and sister sites, UK and internationally.
Why Join?
You'll be joining a specialist automotive engineering business with the backing and international reach of the wider group, working at the sharp end of automotive diagnostics, testing and electrification. For the right person, this is an opportunity to become a key technical member of the business, develop your leadership responsibilities and build a long-term career as the company continues to grow.
If this sounds like you, please apply and I'll be in touch.
