The opportunity
Sound Wave Imaging and Diagnostic Services Limited is looking for an experienced small-animal Veterinary Surgeon to join our growing independent mobile diagnostic service. The role is designed for a clinician who enjoys advanced diagnostic work and wants protected time to focus on ultrasonography and cardiology, without routine consulting, vaccination, surgical or inpatient responsibilities.
You will travel to referring veterinary practices, manage referred cases from a diagnostic perspective and provide clear, clinically useful reports and recommendations to the primary-care team. The post may sit alongside an existing first-opinion role and offers the flexibility of a portfolio-style career.
Core clinical scope
The case mix will reflect referral demand and the successful candidate's established competence. It will include work across both non-cardiac and cardiac imaging, with the initial diary shaped sensibly around the clinician's strongest areas.
Non-cardiac diagnostic ultrasound
- Comprehensive abdominal ultrasonography in dogs and cats, including hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, pancreatic, urinary, reproductive, splenic, adrenal and other abdominal assessment.
- Focused soft-tissue and mass examinations, including assessment of accessible lesions, swellings and body-wall abnormalities.
- Cervical ultrasonography, including appropriate assessment of regional soft tissues, thyroid or salivary structures and cervical lymph nodes.
- Regional lymph node and lymphatic assessment, including targeted evaluation and sampling where indicated.
- Ultrasound assessment for neoplasia staging, including primary lesions, abdominal organs, regional lymph nodes and accessible sites of suspected metastatic disease.
- Selected musculoskeletal ultrasound examinations, including tendon, muscle, joint and periarticular soft-tissue assessment within the clinician's competence.
Cardiac diagnostic imaging
- Comprehensive echocardiographic examinations in dogs and cats, including two-dimensional, M mode and Doppler assessment as appropriate.
- Assessment, classification and monitoring of common acquired cardiac disease, including valvular disease, cardiomyopathies, congestive heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
- Investigation of congenital and more complex cardiac disease within the clinician's training and competence.
- ECG acquisition and interpretation where clinically indicated, with findings integrated into the overall case assessment and report.
- Clear staging, monitoring and treatment recommendations based on the clinical history, imaging findings and current evidence.
Image-guided and minimally invasive procedures
Depending on experience, case suitability and the facilities available at the referring practice, the role may include:
- Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of organs, masses, lesions and lymph nodes.
- Ultrasound-guided Tru-Cut core biopsies and other targeted tissue-sampling procedures.
- Ultrasound-guided localisation and removal of suitable foreign bodies, including selected cervical and superficial soft-tissue foreign bodies.
- Cystocentesis and aspiration or drainage of suitable fluid-filled lesions, collections or body cavities.
- Prostatic wash and other targeted diagnostic sampling procedures where clinically appropriate.
- Selected ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal procedures, including PRP instillation, where this falls within the clinician's experience and the agreed service scope
Reporting and clinical communication
- Review referral histories and determine an appropriate, patient-specific diagnostic approach.
- Produce timely, detailed written reports that distinguish objective findings from clinical interpretation.
- Recommend appropriate further investigation, monitoring and follow-up.
- Provide suggested treatment plans and medication recommendations where appropriate, while the referring veterinary surgeon retains overall responsibility for the case.
- Discuss significant or urgent findings directly with the referring veterinary surgeon and contribute to practical case planning.
- Maintain excellent clinical, professional and record-keeping standards and work within personal competence.
About you
Essential
- MRCVS registration and solid small-animal clinical experience.
- A recognised postgraduate certificate or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Veterinary Cardiology, Small Animal Diagnostic Imaging, or both. Relevant routes may include CertAVP, PgCert, BSAVA/ESAVS qualifications or an appropriate equivalent.
- The competence and confidence to work independently in the diagnostic procedures you undertake, with sound clinical judgement and a clear understanding of your professional limits.
- Strong written reporting and communication skills, with a friendly and collaborative approach to referring practices.
- Comfort working in a mobile role, completing reports remotely and adapting to different practice environments.
- A full UK driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle during the initial employment period.
Particularly welcome
- Practical experience across both comprehensive non-cardiac ultrasonography and echocardiography.
- Experience in ultrasound-guided sampling, biopsy, foreign-body removal or other interventional procedures.
- RCVS Advanced Practitioner status in Cardiology and/or Small Animal Diagnostic Imaging. revious experience or an interest in endoscopy would also be welcomed, although endoscopy does not form part of the immediate core requirements of the role.
How the working day operates
- Appointments, practice liaison and geographical diary planning are managed for you, allowing you to focus on the patient, diagnostic work and report.
- You will travel directly between referring practices rather than commuting to a central hospital or office.
- All ultrasound, diagnostic and remote-working equipment required for the role will be provided.
- You will initially use your own vehicle, with business mileage reimbursed at the agreed rate.
- During the settling-in and probationary period, appointment numbers will be deliberately reduced to allow time to learn our systems and reporting standards without feeling rushed.
- Following successful completion of probation, a driver will be provided on working days so that travel time can be used safely for reporting, case review and clinical administration.
Working pattern and flexibility
The role will initially be for 1-3 agreed days per week, with the opportunity to increase days as the referralnetwork grows. We are happy to discuss a pattern that can work alongside the successful candidate's existingcommitments.
Mobile referral work occasionally changes at short notice. Same-day or within-24-hour referrals, delayedappointments or unavoidable travel disruption may sometimes extend the working day. Some flexibility istherefore appreciated on contracted days, although additional hours will be recognised and paid as overtimein line with the employment terms.
The post does not include a traditional out-of-hours rota and does not require routine availability outsideagreed working days.
What we offer
- Salary of £60,000 - £80,000 per annum pro rata.
- Employer pension contribution and paid annual leave.
- Business mileage for use of your own vehicle, followed by a driver after successful completion of probation.

- All required clinical, ultrasound and remote-working equipment.
- Paid overtime when service requirements extend the agreed working day.
- No routine consultations, surgical lists, inpatient duties or traditional out-of-hours rota.
- Clinical autonomy alongside accessible peer support and case discussion.
- The opportunity to increase working days and help shape an independent, growing service.
