Title: Director of Engineering (Hands-On)
Hybrid: 2 days per week in to London office
Salary: Up to Β£130k
What You'll Be Doing
You'll report directly to the CTO. This isn't a role where you step back from the tools - expect to spend real time writing code, setting the technical example, and sitting in on client conversations to keep delivery on track.
Building & Architecting
- Write production code (Ruby on Rails), owning complex architecture problems and the features that matter most
- Shape the technical approach for new capabilities - design, scoping, and early prototypes
- Chase down the messy, unowned issues that slip through the cracks until they're solved
- Keep quality, performance, and security standards high across everything you ship
Working With Clients
- Be the go-to technical contact for major accounts, turning their needs into working solutions
- Team up with Product to keep the roadmap realistic and grounded in what's technically achievable
- Keep everyone in the loop internally and with clients on what's going well and where the risks are
Leading the Team
- Line-manage 3-5 junior and mid-level engineers: regular check-ins, coaching, and honest feedback that helps them grow
- Spot and fix friction in how the team works, so delivery gets faster and clearer over time
- Help shape a culture that values speed, learning from mistakes, and staying close to what customers actually need
- Get involved in hiring as the team continues to grow
Tools
- Backend: Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Redis
- Frontend: React, TypeScript
How they work
- Everyone there shapes the product, and ideas travel freely across teams
- Small releases beat big-bang launches, and they're not precious about scrapping what isn't working
- Engineers care as much about commercial outcomes as clean code
What You'll Get
- Option to roll over or buy extra holiday
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
- Regular hackathons and team socials
- A genuine chance to shape both the tech and the direction of a growing company
- Equity
