At Sopra Steria Aerospace, Defence & Security (ADS), we work with customers operating some of the UK’s most complex and secure technology environments. Our teams bring together technical expertise, managed services and transformation capability to support critical Defence and National Security programmes.

As our Workplace Managed Service Lead, you will take technical and service leadership of a major Workplace environment. Your focus will be on the technologies that enable the end-user desktop experience, including virtual desktop environments, desktop operating systems, software delivery and associated workplace services.

This is a highly visible leadership position where technical credibility is just as important as your ability to lead people and influence customers. You will be the senior Sopra Steria voice for Workplace, working closely with customer technical teams, senior architects, engineering leads, partners and suppliers to deliver, improve and shape the future of the Workplace service.

Due to the nature of this programme, candidates must currently hold active MoD DV clearance and be able to work on site full time.

What you will be doing:

  • Lead the Workplace Managed Service end to end, overseeing desktop, virtual desktop, software delivery and associated end-user workplace technologies across both BAU and change.
  • Act as the senior technical face of the service to the customer, building trusted relationships with senior technical stakeholders, architects, delivery leaders, partners and suppliers.
  • Provide technical direction and leadership to the Workplace teams, ensuring engineers and technical leads have clear priorities, appropriate support and a strong understanding of what good looks like.
  • Own the health and performance of the service, taking the lead on complex technical issues, ensuring problems are driven through to resolution and escalating risks or delivery concerns appropriately.
  • Influence Workplace architecture and design, contributing to technical designs, standards, governance and customer assurance processes while ensuring solutions are appropriate for a highly secure environment.
  • Shape the future of the Workplace capability, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, innovation and service development while helping the account strengthen and grow its Workplace offering.

What you will bring:

  • Experience working with Workplace, End User Compute or Desktop technologies, including VDI, desktop operating systems and software delivery.
  • A strong technical engineering or architecture background, with a good understanding of how Workplace technologies fit together.
  • Experience leading technical teams or services and providing clear direction when challenges arise.
  • Strong customer and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to engage with senior technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working within secure Defence or National Security environments, with an understanding of governance and assurance processes.
  • The ability to balance technical leadership, people management and service delivery in a complex environment.

It would be great if you had:

  • Experience with VMware Horizon or other enterprise virtual desktop technologies, particularly within large or complex environments.
  • Knowledge of Windows deployment and automation technologies such as MECM, MDT, PowerShell DSC, Terraform or Ansible.
  • Familiarity with Secure by Design, DevSecOps and recognised cyber/risk frameworks such as NIST or MITRE ATT&CK.

How to prepare for a job interview at Sopra Steria

Brush Up on Your Technical Skills

For an IT consulting role, be ready to demonstrate your technical prowess. You might face questions on systems integration, cloud technologies, or even troubleshooting specific software. If you have experience with tools like AWS, Azure, or even specific programming languages, make sure you can talk about them fluently.

Showcase Your Problem-Solving Approach

IT consulting is all about solving problems for clients. Think about how you can illustrate your approach to a past challenge using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). It's a great way to show how you tackle complex issues and come up with effective solutions.

Know the Business Impact of IT Solutions

When discussing your experiences, focus not just on the tech solutions you implemented, but also on their business impact. Employers want to see that you can connect IT with organisational goals. Prep examples that highlight how your tech contributions improved efficiency or reduced costs for past clients or projects.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

Since IT consulting often involves teamwork and client interactions, expect behavioural questions that assess your interpersonal skills. Be prepared with examples that demonstrate your adaptability, communication skills, and how you handle client feedback. Before the interview, think of situations where you worked closely with clients to create effective IT strategies or changes.
