The Deputy Matron will act as a lead nurse for the paediatric ward, using expert decision making and clinical judgement to uphold professional standards and support the team to ensure delivery of a high-quality responsive service to children and their families. The Deputy Matron will support the Modern Matron in ensuring the day-to-day operational management is safe, effective, and aligned with the organisation's values and mission. The post holder will be highly visible in their area and will act as a role model and openly sharing knowledge and expertise to support others to learn, trust and grow.

What you’ll do:

  • Manage the ward/department, Team Leader, and clinical nurse specialists in assessing the clinical skills required to deliver a safe and quality service.
  • Lead on identifying deficits and implement programmes to address the issues.
  • Using their knowledge and experience to work with the matron, drive up the standards of clinical care.
  • Provide strong leadership to their teams and ensure senior clinical presence on the ward/unit.
  • You’ll manage quality improvement initiatives to drive up high quality clinical care.
  • Investigate complex incidents and identify and implement corrective action.
  • You’ll act as a change agent and innovator, promoting an effective change culture within nursing teams.
  • Work with the Matron in the financial management of the service being aware of budgets and working within them.

  • Registered Nurse (Child) (essential)
  • Teaching/assessing qualification (essential)
  • Evidence of significant clinical experience in medical area and ability to function at level required. (essential)
  • Knowledge of NMC Codes and guidelines and their implications for practice
  • Management qualification or working towards obtaining one.
