About us
Big decisions deserve clear thinking.
At Sopher + Co, we've spent more than 50 years helping entrepreneurs and high-net-worth individuals navigate complex financial and commercial challenges. From tax planning and private office services to business advisory and technology, we bring everything together to make life simpler and help our clients focus on what matters most.
We don't just solve problems. We build relationships, offer clarity, and give our clients the confidence to move forward. And it's our people who make that possible.
We started in Elstree in 1975, working closely with clients in the media, entertainment and music industries. Today, we support a diverse and prestigious client base across more than 20 sectors, with a continued strong and long-standing presence in entertainment and media. While we've grown, our approach hasn't changed. We keep things straightforward and focus on advice that is practical, personal, and easy to act on.
If something's complex, we simplify it. That's where we add value.
The role
We're looking for an experienced UK-US Tax Manager to join our specialist US/UK tax team in our Mayfair office.
This is a varied, client-facing role. You'll manage a portfolio of US-connected individuals and families, and handle both their UK and US personal tax affairs. Your clients include US citizens and green card holders living in the UK, UK residents with US income or assets, internationally mobile executives, entrepreneurs, and clients from our long-standing entertainment and media base with earnings in both countries.
You'll lead engagements, manage the team who deliver them, and act as a trusted day-to-day adviser to your clients. You'll also play an important part in the continued growth of this specialist service line.
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Compliance and advisory
- Oversee UK Self Assessment returns and US Forms 1040 and 1040-NR, including state returns where required.
- Oversee US information reporting, including FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) and Forms 8938, 1116, 2555, 8621, 3520, 3520-A and 8833.
- Advise on UK residence under the Statutory Residence Test, split-year treatment and the four-year foreign income and gains (FIG) regime.
- Apply the UK-US Double Taxation Convention, including the residence tie-breaker, pensions and relief from double taxation.
- Bring UK and US analysis together into one clear recommendation, for example on the timing of a bonus, a share sale or a move between the two countries.
- Help clients bring their US filings up to date, including under the IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures.
Financial and commercial
- Own the financial management of your engagements, including budgets, WIP, billing, recoveries and cash collection.
- Support marketing events and business development, and build your network with lawyers, wealth managers and family offices.
People and team
- Manage and develop assistant managers, seniors and juniors, and take an active role in the annual appraisal process.
- Review technical work and champion consistent quality standards.
- Contribute to a high-performance culture reflecting Sopher + Co's commitment to excellence and client care.
Client and relationship
- Manage day-to-day relationships across your portfolio and build trust with clients and their advisers.
- Lead meetings on routine and moderately complex matters, and explain issues clearly with practical solutions.
- Coordinate UK, US and specialist colleagues to deliver joined-up advice.
Risk management
- Own risk on your engagements, balancing quality, deadlines, commercial pressure and client service.
- Confirm engagement letters, AML and KYC checks are in place and current before work starts.
Embracing change
- Drive process and technology improvements on your engagements.
What you'll bring
You're technically strong across UK and US personal tax, and confident without relying on jargon. You build trust by making complex cross-border matters easy to understand.
You're organised, proactive, and take ownership of your work. You manage your own workload through the UK and US filing peaks, and know how to prioritise.
You communicate clearly and professionally, both in writing and verbally, and are confident dealing directly with clients and their advisers.
You enjoy working in a collaborative team where people share knowledge openly and support one another.
You'll also bring:
- The Enrolled Agent (EA) or US Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
- A UK tax qualification, such as Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) or Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT), or ACA or ACCA with a tax focus. This is strongly preferred.
- At least five years' experience in UK and US personal tax, handling both sides of a client's affairs.
- Strong knowledge of the Statutory Residence Test, the FIG regime, the UK-US Double Taxation Convention, foreign tax credits, passive foreign investment companies (PFICs) and US reporting of foreign trusts.
- Experience reviewing technical work and supervising a team.
- Strong organisational and time management skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Advanced computer skills and working knowledge of UK and US tax software.
- The ability to work with prestigious clients who require complete confidentiality.
- Knowledge of trusts, US gift and estate tax, UK inheritance tax, is advantageous but not essential.
What you'll get in return
We offer a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, designed to support your health, wellbeing, financial security and career development.
Our benefits include (some available from day one, others after probation or length of service):
- Private Medical Insurance
- Life assurance (Death in Service)
- Group Income Protection (GIP)
- Employee Assistance Programme and 24/7 Digital GP access
- YuLife wellbeing platform
