Phlebotomy Tech I FLOAT in Leigh

This position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). This position may be responsible for providing coverage at multiple locations, collecting and receiving biological specimens into the department, entering them into the company’s computer system, preparing samples for analytical testing, and distributing these specimens to the appropriate analytical area. The role includes responsibility for pre- and post-aspects of analytical testing, and performing specified analytical testing as assigned. It follows the guidelines of the Code of Conduct. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and applicable professional standards.

Core Functions

• Specimen collection, general laboratory specimen processing, or referral laboratory processing. This includes ensuring correct patient and specimen identification, specimen integrity, and using appropriate techniques for all age criteria.
• Enter and verify patient demographics, location, physician data, tests requested, time and date of collection, appropriate clinical information, and all other pertinent data from requisitions and computer-generated orders.
• Verify accuracy of entered information, appropriateness of specimens received, aliquot and label specimens according to departmental procedures, and deliver specimens to the technical area in a timely manner.
• May assist in monitoring workflow and training new employees.
• Focus on quality by ensuring all work performed is accurate and complete.
• Complete documents legibly and accurately per site protocol, follow established methods, maintain familiarity with departmental procedures, record communications, initiate reports for patient reporting and quality assurance, and meet departmental standards for productivity and quality.
• Participate in committees or Six Sigma teams, maintain acceptable specimen rejection rates.
• Participate in departmental financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies and materials, avoid waste, and support cost-reduction initiatives.
• Apply basic knowledge of billing and commit to an error-free work environment.
• Communicate courteously and professionally with internal and external customers.
• Interact with co-workers with a focus on teamwork and customer service.

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY

Primarily departmental responsibility, involving interdepartmental communication and activities. Internal customers are employees of the system. External customers include nurses, physicians, office personnel, and vendors.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT FACTORS

Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently. Required to lift, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds. Requires manual dexterity, standard precautions due to exposure to blood, body fluids, chemicals, electrical, and biological hazards. Must distinguish colours, take direction, and assimilate instructions quickly. Requires use of computer, printers, copiers, telephone, fax, and department-specific equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum age requirement of 18.
• High School diploma or equivalent required; may depend on state regulatory requirements.
• Basic knowledge of department resource materials.
• Completion of a phlebotomy program or phlebotomy experience.
• Phlebotomy certification as defined by state regulations.
• Position may require DHS Fingerprinting Certification or ability to obtain fingerprint certification.
• Must possess a valid state driver's license in the state of employment and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.
• Float positions require travel and flexible hours, covering mobile and in-office phlebotomy locations with minimal notice, weekends, holidays, overtime, and occasional on-call duties.
• Progression through career ladder II-IV subject to completion of career ladder requirements.
