Join Imperial College London’s Digital Media Lab as a Unity Development Technician, with a focus on coding and multiplayer experiences, and help shape the future of interactive and immersive education. In this role, you will design and build engaging learning experiences, from gamified applications to virtual and hybrid‑XR simulations, using Unity and related tools. Working at the intersection of software engineering, creativity and education, you will contribute to high-impact projects that support Imperial’s online, blended and immersive learning offerings. You will play a key role in architecting robust, scalable Unity applications, ensuring performance, maintainability and best practice across our development pipelines.
What you would be doing:
- Working within the DML in‑house media production and Interactive team to support the creation of interactive learning experiences, as well as virtual and 3D media production.
- Working simultaneously on multiple briefs with creative, project and development practitioners from across college, as well as external consultants.
- Prototyping Unity, Unreal, or web‑based applications, with experience of multiplayer networking and programming in Unity.
- Architecting and implementing robust, scalable code architecture for Unity applications, with emphasis on performance optimisation, design patterns, and maintainable software practices.
- Working with version control systems including Perforce and Github.
- Collaborating with clients to refine system and UX requirements for interactive projects.
- Ideate, prototype and test solutions with new software stacks, AI integrations and other solutions that may increase our capabilities.
- Developing custom tools, plugins, and editor extensions to enhance development workflows and maximise pipeline efficiency across multiple project teams.
- Implementing code review processes and establishing coding standards, including implementation of automated testing frameworks and continuous integration/deployment pipelines.
- Working with DML and affiliated staff and crew on such tasks that are required of the team regardless of praxis discipline.
- Up‑skilling and supporting colleagues.
- Following DML’s Media Operations Management protocols for project planning and tracking.
- Solving complex technical issues during development and deployment.
- Identify/Create the tools necessary to maximise pipeline processes and delivery.
What we are looking for:
- Advanced Unity and C# development skills.
- Strong grounding in software engineering principles and scalable architecture.
- Experience building production‑ready applications with version control (Git/Perforce).
- Knowledge of multiplayer systems and/or complex interactive applications.
- Ability to improve workflows through tools, plugins, and pipeline optimisation.
- Experience with UI/UX implementation and interactive system design.
- Strong problem‑solving, collaboration, and testing practices.
