Imperial College London and the University of Cumbria have entered into a partnership to form the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine (PCSM), based at the University of Cumbria at the Carlisle Fusehill Street campus. PCSM’s vision is to improve health outcomes for the people of Cumbria. The School is now seeking to appoint an outstanding individual as Subject Lead for Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

As the Subject Lead for Obstetrics and Gynaecology you will be responsible for the planning and development of innovative and engaging learning events, and associated teaching and learning and assessment materials to support the subject teaching within the Medical Sciences and Clinical Skills and Professional Practice (CSPP) modules. Working with the Head of Assessments and the Head of Curriculum Development, you will develop formative and summative assessment materials that align with learning outcomes, enabling students to monitor their own learning and preparing them effectively for key summative assessments, such as the Medical Licensing Assessment. You will also support the development and oversight of clinical placement activities in the subject area. The curriculum is being designed collaboratively with academic and clinical colleagues to address the vision and aims of the school, and the unique challenges of delivery across Cumbria.

You will be actively involved in delivering teaching, working with the Head of Medical Sciences, the Head of Clinical Education and our wider teaching team.

What you would be doing:

  • Work closely with relevant academic leads and clinical colleagues to formulate and implement a plan for the delivery of the subject teaching within the Medical Sciences and Clinical Skills and Professional Practice modules.
  • Use subject matter expertise and educational experience to create and curate high quality teaching materials across a range of teaching and learning modalities, which reflect the conditions and presentations that students will need to recognise for the Medical Licensing Assessment and are authentic to the students’ parallel clinical experiences.
  • Work closely with other teaching leads and development teams to ensure close integration of medical science, anatomy, and clinical skills and reasoning teaching within the subject.
  • Formulate a plan for the delivery of the subject area within placements, working with clinical colleagues to ensure learning opportunities are well calibrated across north and south Cumbria to provide an equitable experience, and that students are suitably prepared for the placement.
  • Develop formative and summative assessments based on the learning materials generated that are aligned to, and reflective of, the questions students will encounter in the relevant aspects of Medical Licensing Assessment Applied Knowledge Test and the Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment.
  • Participate in marking and quality assurance activity related to assessment.
  • Once the programme is underway, continuously monitor, evaluate and improve the quality of content and delivery, responding to feedback from all sources, such as student surveys, staff‑student committees and external examiners.
  • Contribute as requested to the wider delivery of medical school activities, for example through participation in admissions, tutoring, and assessment and feedback.

What we are looking for:

  • A primary medical qualification, with full GMC registration, a licence to practise validated within the last 5 years in medicine in the UK.
  • MRCOG or equivalent.
  • Experience of working as a Substantive Consultant or SAS doctor within the relevant specialty in the Cumbria Region.
  • Enthusiasm and passion for teaching, with experience of teaching or training, and of developing teaching, learning and assessment materials.
  • Ability to role‑model the professional values and behaviours required of medical professionals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to coordinate others and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Leadership and teamwork skills, with the ability to appropriately exercise discretion and operational decisions within remit.
