The Role

We are seeking two Future Power Systems Analysts to play a key role in shaping the development and operation of Northern Ireland’s future electricity system, supporting decarbonisation, system security and innovation.

These roles sit at the heart of SONI’s Operational Policy, Innovation and System Transformation activities, contributing to the delivery of a secure, low‑carbon electricity system capable of operating with up to 100% renewable electricity. Working closely with internal teams, NIE Networks, regulators, industry participants and technology providers, you will support the assessment, development and implementation of future system solutions.

While the roles have different areas of emphasis – Technology Enablement and Innovation, and TSO–DSO Future Operating Model – they share a strong common core of analytical thinking, stakeholder engagement and delivery of complex initiatives in a regulated environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support delivery of the Operational Policy Roadmap and Innovation Strategy
  • Evaluate system impacts of emerging technologies and new approaches
  • Support the trialling, testing and integration of new technologies
  • Assist with integration of flexibility solutions such as storage, hybrid connections and demand‑side response
  • Support development of internal capability in emerging technologies
  • Support development and implementation of the TSO–DSO future operating model
  • Contribute to the development of future products and services enabling coordinated transmission and distribution system operation
  • Translate EU network codes and regulatory requirements into operational policies and implementation approaches
  • Support multi‑year implementation planning and delivery
  • Assist integration of distribution‑level services into system operations
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including NIE Networks, industry partners and Original Equipment Manufacturers
  • Support statutory and regulatory assessments and compliance activities
  • Prepare reports, presentations and technical outputs
  • Contribute to innovation reporting and governance updates across SONI and EirGrid
  • Support demand‑side strategy and broader system transformation initiatives

Critical Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Relevant third‑level qualification in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), economics, business or a related discipline with 3+ years’ relevant experience
  • Understanding of power systems, including generation, demand and emerging or enabling technologies
  • Experience using analytical tools such as Python, R or Excel for working with complex data sets
  • Understanding of business processes and/or system operations in a technical or regulated environment
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and concisely
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with and influence stakeholders in a constructive and respectful way

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a regulated industry and ability to assess compliance with relevant obligations
  • Knowledge of decarbonisation strategies and renewable energy policies
  • Familiarity with the Single Electricity Market (SEM) or European power systems and transmission system operators
  • Knowledge of, or ability to interpret, EU network codes and regulatory frameworks
  • Experience working in the electricity or broader energy sector
