SONI (System Operator for Northern Ireland) is Northern Ireland’s Transmission System Operator (TSO). The Strategy & Sustainability team have a crucial role at the centre of the business in ensuring the development and delivery of the SONI Strategy and Sustainability programmes. This includes the development of the company strategy and delivery of strategic initiatives, understanding the energy policy landscape locally and within a European context and its impact on Northern Ireland, the development and coordination of business planning and SONI’s sustainability programme.
The Strategy & Sustainability Policy Analyst will play a key role in the organisation by providing support across the core remit of team with respect to SONI Strategy and Business plan tracking and reporting, energy policy monitoring and analysis and supporting SONI’s sustainability programme. The Strategy & Sustainability Analyst will:
- Support the implementation, tracking, and reporting of the SONI Strategy and business‑planning initiatives and processes.
- Support the embedding and tracking of SONI’s Sustainability Strategy and associated Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) targets across the organisation.
- Monitor and research the energy policy landscape at local, national, and international levels, and support engagement with government departments, relevant regulatory bodies, and key industry stakeholders as required for the SONI business.
- Support SONI in monitoring compliance obligations under relevant EU network codes and regulations relating to the Single Electricity Market.
- Support the coordination and tracking of SONI’s role within various European energy bodies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement and maintain processes to support the coordination, tracking and reporting of the SONI annual business plan, SONI Strategy and Sustainability initiatives and EU energy policy compliance.
- Apply an informed understanding of the NI and EU energy policy landscape to analyse and monitor impacts on SONI and its stakeholders.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with external stakeholders, including government departments, relevant regulatory bodies, and key industry parties.
- Work collaboratively with teams across all areas of the organisation on core activities within the Strategy & Sustainability team.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as reasonably requested by the Head of Strategy & Sustainability.
- Be prepared to travel for business purposes as required.
What You’ll Need:
Essential:- Degree in business, economics, finance, engineering or a closely related discipline, with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar role, working in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Experience in policy analysis ideally within an energy context.
- Excellent qualitative and quantitative analytical abilities with attention to detail, coupled with the ability to make reasoned judgements based on available information.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to summarise and convey complex issues clearly.
- Ability to draft documentation in a rational, evidence-based, clear and concise manner.
- Exceptional organisational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines whilst producing high quality deliverables.
- Strong financial and commercial awareness, along with proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), and the ability to leverage these tools for data analysis, reporting, and professional documentation.
- Demonstrated flexible working approach with the ability to lead and prioritise a wide range of demands and activities whilst maintaining a professional and positive focus.
- Ability to guide, persuade and influence others through well-developed communication and diplomacy skills.
- Experience working in a regulated organisation or with a regulator, and/or experience within an energy environment.
- Project management experience or experience working in a project-based environment.
