SONI is Northern Ireland’s Transmission System Operator. We are the people behind Northern Ireland’s electricity grid, ensuring that every home, business, school, hospital, factory and farm has power when and where they need it. Our focus is on safety, security and reliability, playing a critical role in delivering a cleaner, cheaper, more secure energy future for everyone living in Northern Ireland.

The work environment is challenging, fast-moving, collaborative and team orientated, driven by continual development, knowledge and teamwork. Our people are committed to reducing Northern Ireland’s reliance on fossil fuels and transforming the energy system to make decarbonisation a reality while providing a safe and reliable electricity supply.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys problem-solving, working with data, and learning how our electricity system works. This role offers a great introduction to the energy sector for someone with an interest in electrical engineering and who is keen to develop a broad understanding of the Northern Ireland transmission system and how energy markets operate.

In this role, you’ll work on a mix of technical and commercial topics:

  • Monitor the performance of DS3 System Services to ensure units meet Grid Code and contractual requirements.
  • Investigate and help resolve any technical issues identified by the Control Centre or through performance monitoring.
  • Support the automation of processes, including writing code (e.g., Python) and improving existing scripts developed by colleagues.
  • Review and help resolve queries or disputes relating to commercial contracts.
  • Support the registration process for new units connecting to the power system and respond to related queries.
  • Carry out technical assessments of DS3 System Services via the biannual Gate process, including reporting on spend and supporting future budget forecasts.
  • Act as SONI’s lead in supporting the annual Tariff and Imperfections processes in collaboration with EirGrid.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships across the wider EirGrid Group, with Distribution System Operators, regulatory bodies, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Clearly explain technical information in a way that is accessible to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Work closely with counterparts in EirGrid and NIE Networks on shared areas of responsibility.
  • Contribute proactively to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities that support SONI’s ambition to operate as a world-class Transmission System Operator.

Essential

  • Background in engineering, power systems, or another relevant technical discipline — or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to approach challenges creatively and logically.
  • Ability to extract, interpret, and analyse data from a range of systems using different tools, methods, and scripting approaches.
  • Proficiency in Python (or similar programming languages), with the ability to maintain and develop code to improve reliability and efficiency.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical information to different audiences.
  • Strong awareness of stakeholder needs and a good understanding of industry expectations relevant to the role.

Why join us?

  • Play a vital role in shaping sustainable energy projects that benefit communities and the environment.
  • Enjoy a competitive salary, performance-related bonus, private medical cover, and pension matching.
  • Benefit from flexible working arrangements, including hybrid options (3 days office / 2 days home).
  • Enhanced holidays, maternity and paternity leave and wellbeing days.
  • Access salary sacrifice schemes (such as cycle to work, EV scheme), free car parking, onsite EV charging and complimentary lunch.
  • Access professional development opportunities and clear career progression pathways.
  • We offer an inclusive culture that values diversity, supports flexible working and empowers you to grow.

If you are seeking a challenging and impactful role within the energy sector, we’d love to hear from you. Join us in shaping the future of SONI and delivering a cleaner and more secure energy future for everyone living in Northern Ireland.

Closing date for applications is 16 February 2026. Submit your application by uploading your CV with a cover letter (in one document).
