We are expanding our specialist engineering team and seeking a Project & Applications Engineer to deliver innovative, bespoke solutions for customers worldwide. This is a hands-on, varied and technically rich role ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of engineering, customer interaction, offshore operations and multi-disciplinary problem solving.
The Opportunity
- You will coordinate and deliver custom engineering projects using Sonardyne technology, from concept and prototype through test, validation and integration.
- Working closely with internal teams and customers, you’ll ensure solutions are delivered safely, on time, on budget and to the highest technical standard.
- This role includes offshore work, international travel, and involvement in real-world deployment of advanced subsea technologies.
If you join you will be:
- Delivering bespoke engineering solutions that meet specific customer requirements on schedule, within budget, and aligned with Sonardyne’s quality standards.
- Integrating Sonardyne systems onto customer platforms, ensuring optimal performance.
- Working collaboratively with Engineering, Production, Finance, Software and Sales teams to design, build, test and deliver custom solutions.
- Supporting customer trials onshore and offshore worldwide, including planning, execution, data analysis and reporting.
- Communicating technical and safety-critical information clearly in environments where English may not be the first language.
- Providing feedback from field operations to drive product improvements and roadmap decisions.
- Monitoring competitor technology and feeding commercial intelligence back to the business.
- Processing and interpreting datasets from products such as SPRINT-Nav and Ranger 2 for troubleshooting and support.
- Setting up and mobilising marine survey equipment on vessels, selecting appropriate sensors and GNSS systems (RTK vs DGPS).
- Reading wiring diagrams, building test cables, and working safely with electronic equipment (soldering irons, DVMs, oscilloscopes).
- Understanding and working with mechanical drawings to design or adapt mounting hardware in the field.
- Producing and reviewing user manuals, procedures and technical documentation.
- Preparing risk assessments, toolbox talks and safety documentation for tasks on vessels and customer sites.
- Supporting customer training, demonstrations, and technology evaluations.
- Providing timely communication to internal and external stakeholders throughout a project’s lifecycle.
- Participating in project closeouts and lessons-learned activities to improve processes.
- Acting as a recognised authority in Sonardyne system integration and operation.
- Supporting the marketing team with technical information when required.

Ideally we would like:
- Strong safety-first mindset with proven experience applying HSE policies and completing risk assessments.
- Experience working offshore and internationally.
- Ability to explain safety-critical and technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Competent with marine ancillary equipment (GNSS, sound velocity sensors, survey sensors).
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, build cables, and use electronic test tools.
- Hands-on experience with Sonardyne systems (USBL, LBL, INS, SMART, BlueComm, ADL, AMT/Fetch/AZA).
- Experience installing, commissioning and operating Sonardyne acoustic technologies.
- Understanding of subsea hardware interfacing (serial/Ethernet protocols, power, timing, mechanical interfaces).
- Strong communication, teamwork, adaptability, and attention to detail.
- Good commercial awareness when working on customer sites.
- Physical readiness to work at height, in confined spaces, lift up to 25 kg, and operate safely on vessels.
- Ability to work autonomously and represent Sonardyne professionally worldwide.
- Degree in an Engineering discipline (Robotics, Mechatronics, Survey, Electronics, Systems, Communications, Software or related).
- Full UK driving licence.
- Offshore medical BOSIET (or equivalent).
It would be a bonus if you had:
- Experience with Python.
- Knowledge of hydrographic survey techniques, geodesy, or acoustic array planning.
- Experience in direct customer liaison and long-term relationship building.
- Ability to drive large vehicles with trailers.
- Ability to launch and recover small boats or operate small vessels for trials.
- Awareness of embedded software, digital electronics or simulation tools.
- Powerboat Level 2 (commercial endorsement).
