Job DescriptionAre you looking for your next opportunity?Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Programmes Underwriter, US Casualty in our Cross-Class Portfolio team.Our Cross Class Portfolio team manages a diverse portfolio of delegated authority business across multiple classes, with a strong focus on disciplined underwriting, portfolio oversight and data-driven decision-making. Working closely with brokers, coverholders and internal stakeholders, the team evaluates new opportunities, monitors performance and drives profitable growth through strong governance, underwriting expertise and market insight.Location: This position will be based out of our London office. We strive for collaboration which is why we offer a work environmentwhere our employees thrive and develop long lasting careers.Our business, your impact, our opportunity:What you’ll be doing:Strategy and PlanningUnderstand and contribute to delivery of the divisional business plan, referring to Senior Underwriters or Underwriters where appropriateParticipate in relevant meetings to share insight, develop strategy, and promote knowledge and best practicePromote the department, division, and wider company to maximise brand value and leverageApply the reinsurance strategy to protect the portfolio, referring to Senior Underwriters or Underwriters where appropriatePolicy, Process and ProceduresPerform underwriting activities, where authority is granted, in line with all legal and regulatory requirements to ensure obligations are metFollow underwriting standards, instructions and good practice to minimise risk and maximise efficiencyEnsure insurance risks, including delegated underwriting authorities where relevant, are accurately recorded and measured in line with good practice, while developing understanding of policy wording changesMaintain awareness and understanding of reinsurance requirements to minimise risk and support delivery of business plan objectivesEnvironmental Awareness/Customer FocusEstablish technical knowledge and judgement to support Senior/Underwriters with identifying issues and opportunitiesEstablishes, develops and strengthens relationships with stakeholders including customers, brokers, business partners and colleagues to maximise influence and achieve business objectivesDemonstrate support for market associations and trade bodiesDemonstrates an understanding and awareness of market dynamics and market cycle to drive and enhance business performanceTechnical PerformanceDevelop expertise and technical knowledge by working with Head of/Senior/Underwriters to identify and complete appropriate learning and development activitiesUnderwrite insurance risks, where authority is granted, in line with the business plan and delegated underwriting authority. This includes negotiating rates, terms and conditions for new and existing business, supporting policy wording changes where appropriate, ensuring compliance with internal and external requirements, contributing to business objectives, and assisting credit control with premium collection where requiredMaintain awareness of portfolio review and analysis to monitor progress against business objectivesEnsure all authorised business is appropriately peer reviewed and written in line with company underwriting standards and individual authority limitsPeople ManagementOperate collaboratively with colleagues in the team to acquire knowledge and expertise and understand required standards of performanceActs in accordance with, and is an advocate of, the Sompo ValuesEducation experience up to A-level or equivalent (preferable)Undertaking/Interest in completing industry qualification e.g. CII (preferable)Experience of working in an underwriting environment within a specialised/complex underwriting area (preferable)Experience of resolving underwriting queriesProficient in MS Office applications e.g. Excel and other departmental software packagesGood interpersonal and communication skillsGood negotiation skillsGood customer orientation skillsAbility to analyse dataGood decision-making and underwriting judgementStrong attention to detailStrong level of numeracy and literacy skillsStrong organisational and prioritisation skillsAbility to collaborate effectively within a team environmentUsed risk profiling and pricing tools and loss modelsAt Sompo, we recognize that the talent, skills, and commitment of our employees drive our success.
