Job Description

Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Performance Management Analyst in our UK Performance Management team in our Underwriting business.

We are seeking an exceptionally capable and motivated analyst to work within our underwriting Performance Management team, based in our London office.

The successful candidate will play a key role in evaluating performance and providing insights to our UK and London Market Insurance business, which includes which includes Property, Energy, Marine, Aviation, Financial Lines, Cyber, Financial & Political Risk, General Liability, Crisis Management and Accident & Health.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of key performance metrics and reports relating underwriting profitability across portfolios and segments.
  • Portfolio analyses:
    • Analyse datasets and apply actuarial methods and techniques to extract meaningful insights for use in underwriting performance management.
    • Identify trends, anomalies and areas for improvement in underwriting performance
    • Contribute to the development of potential underwriting actions, quantifying the impact of such actions on the expected loss ratio.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining portfolio management and optimization tools and databases.
  • Help to develop reports, dashboard and MI for underwriting teams and Management, that enable better data-driven underwriting decisions.
  • Communicate findings through clear and concise presentations, reports and emails.
  • Data Management:
    • Ensure accuracy and completeness of underwriting data.
    • Implement data quality control measures to enhance reliability
  • Collaborate with the pricing, reserving, capital, risk and exposure management functions in support of a consistent actuarial approach across the business.
  • Perform technical, industry, and company research using publicly available information, to develop relevant benchmarks and/or inputs and assumptions for actuarial models.
  • Keep abreast of industry developments and trends that could impact Sompo.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with underwriters, FP&A, claims personnel and the data and operations teams.
  • Other ad hoc duties as required.

Desired Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • A first or a 2.1 in a mathematical or scientific degree subject.
  • 2-5 years experience in underwriting analytics, performance management or actuarial pricing/reserving/capital modelling.
  • Proficiency in Excel and strong Power BI skills.
  • Strong IT skills in areas such as SQL, R, or Python are an advantage.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to think and operate independently within a fast-paced, multi-tasked, global organisation.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong ability to interpret complex data sets.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively interact with all levels including senior managers.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise multiple tasks, projects, and assignments.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Dynamic/flexible demeanour with strong client service skills.
  • Ability to interface with team members and client personnel in demanding, deadline-driven situations.
