Somerton Town Council is seeking an Executive Officer (Town Clerk & Responsible Financial Officer) who wants to make a meaningful difference in a town with character and a strong sense of community. This is a leadership role for someone who enjoys shaping how an organisation works, improving what it delivers and helping elected members make confident, well-informed decisions.
Somerton is a historic market town with a proud identity and a council ready to build on its existing priorities while taking a fresh look at what comes next. We have a committed team and a community that cares deeply about its town, and now is the moment to refine our focus and organise the next phase of work. We’re looking for a Clerk who can help reset direction with clarity and purpose – someone who brings structure, momentum and calm authority to a busy, visible organisation.
You’ll play a central role in strengthening how the Council operates: revisiting the Town Plan to confirm our long-term direction, preparing for potential future devolution opportunities, and helping us plan responsibly for long-term needs such as cemetery capacity. You’ll guide councillors with clear, balanced advice, support strong governance, and ensure our budget is managed with clarity and long-term sustainability.
This is a role with genuine breadth. Some days you’ll be shaping strategy and advising members; others you’ll be working with staff to keep services running smoothly or progressing practical projects that matter to residents. You don’t need to come from the local council sector – what matters is strong judgement, confidence working with elected or senior stakeholders, and the ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on delivery.
If you’re motivated by public service, enjoy leading people and want to help a capable council grow in confidence, clarity and impact, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
Benefits:
- Local Government Pension Scheme
- Generous annual leave
- Free car parking on site
- Support for professional development
Interviews: In person between 21st September and 2nd October 2026
To Apply: If you feel you are a suitable candidate and would like to work for Somerton Town Council, please do not hesitate to apply.
