This role provides the opportunity for hybrid working, allowing you to work either from home, subject to managerial approval, or from one of our offices. 30 days' annual leave (in addition to bank holidays). The contract offered is permanent and full-time (37 hours per week).

What will I be doing?

We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that. As an Assistant Lighting Engineer within the highway operations group, your role is pivotal in ensuring the effective management and delivery of street lighting projects. This role involves initiating, developing and managing projects using a combination of specialist and technical knowledge, as well as interpersonal skills. You will provide advice, guidance and support to senior professionals, managers, colleagues and external organisations on various street lighting issues.

Your day-to-day work will involve:

  • Assisting with supervision of our current Term Maintenance Contractor and junior members of the Team.
  • Providing advice, guidance and support to Senior professionals, Managers, colleagues and external organisations on a variety of street lighting issues including design standards, current highway legislation and legal agreements, environmental impacts and political awareness.
  • Undertaking preliminary investigations into contractual/political/technical issues and advising Senior professionals and managers on findings and have involvement with decision regarding any action to be taken.
  • Assisting in the design and delivery of presentations and briefings to members of the public, County Councillors, Parish Councils, District Councils, actions groups and colleagues to support highway project work and policy implementation.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent related Electrical qualification.
  • Thorough understanding of street lighting standards and current highway legislation.
  • Experience in managing and delivering street lighting projects and providing advice and guidance to street lighting issues.
  • A valid driver's license or the means and commitment to travel countywide including rural areas not supported by public transport is essential for site visits and inspections across Somerset.

The Salary for the role is Grade 11, ranging from £31,586 to £35,235 per annum.
