Somers Forge, established in 1866, is a globally recognised leader in forging and machining excellence. From its advanced manufacturing facility in Halesowen, in the heart of the industrial Black Country, the company produces critical components ranging from 1 kg to 80 tonnes and up to 23 meters in length. Customer base includes global OEMs and Tier 1 & 2 suppliers.
Role Description
The Vertical Borer Operator is a full-time, on-site role based at Somers Forge's Halesowen facility. This role involves setting up, operating, and monitoring vertical boring machines to produce large, precision-engineered components to specification.
Main Responsibilities
- Machining high quality components in accordance with technical engineering drawings and specifications
- Handling and machining components up to 10 tonnes
- Setting and clocking one-off forged components using clamps, angle plates, etc.
- Safe use of overhead cranes (LOLER training will be provided)
- Correctly identifying parts using hard stamping
- Deburring components and ensuring they are prepared for safe transport
- Routine maintenance of machinery, including swarf removal, oiling and greasing
- Completing daily bookings against route cards, including job numbers and timings
- Inspecting components throughout the machining process to ensure quality standards are met
- Maintaining a safe, clean and compliant working environment in line with the Company's Health & Safety Policy

You'll be conscientious, methodical and able to work on your own initiative, with a strong sense of responsibility and pride in the quality of your work. Task focused team player, you'll be able to build effective working relationships across the business and take a proactive approach to supporting the machine shop function.
Qualifications
- Experience operating vertical boring machines or similar large CNC/manual machine tools
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, technical specifications, and work instructions.
- Pervious experience in forging, heavy machining sectors
- Completion of an apprenticeship with an appropriate technical qualification
Work Schedule
- Working Double Day Shifts: 6am - 2pm, 2pm - 10pm
