Role Overview
As the Lead Electrical Design Engineer, you will take ownership of the electrical design and development of systems for grid connection assets as part of the contestable works for DNO/IDNO adoption and private networks construction. You will provide technical leadership throughout DNO/IDNO liaison, electrical design, construction, and commissioning, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards and delivering reliable, high-performing solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead on the design, development, and testing of electrical systems and components for grid connection, including HV/EHV cable, switchgear, substation as part of the contestable works and private networks.
- Design and specify control systems and safety features to ensure operational integrity and compliance against DNO/IDNO G81 and best practices.
- Provide expert technical advice to internal procurement, design, construction, and delivery teams.
- Liaise with DNO, analyse system performance, identify areas for optimisation, and implement engineering improvements in areas such as cable route proving and network configuration optioneering.
- Develop and implement maintenance strategies in collaboration with equipment suppliers and other partners.
- Support troubleshooting of electrical issues external to the charging cabinet.
- Ensure all electrical designs and installations adhere to applicable codes, DNO/IDNO G81 standards, and regulations (e.g., NEC, BS7671, IEC).
- Conduct HV/EHV cable route feasibility studies, project design survey activities and pre-construction critical path analysis.
Required Skills & Experience
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (or working toward chartership) preferred.
- Strong experience in electrical system design for DNO grid connections, IDNO adoption, ICP contestable works, power distribution, or renewable energy infrastructure.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant electrical standards and regulatory frameworks.
- Proven ability to lead design processes and provide technical authority on complex projects.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with a focus on continuous improvement.
