Specialist Sexual Health Nurse, Herefordshire

Location: Herefordshire

Contract: Permanent Part-time: 24 hours per week

Salary: Band 6 Entry

As a Sexual Health Nurse, you will provide personalised assessment, testing, treatment, contraception and health promotion within a supportive, inclusive service.

Working alongside experienced clinical colleagues, you will deliver safe, compassionate care while developing your skills across STI management, contraception, LARC, safeguarding and health promotion.

You will also contribute to clinical governance, audit and quality improvement to help continually improve our service.

About the Role

The postholder will:

  • Provide comprehensive assessment, advice, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections in accordance with competence, local protocols, PGDs and prescribing authority.
  • Undertake pregnancy testing and provide contraception, including LARC, within the postholder’s competence and the scope of the service.
  • Assess contraceptive needs and undertake comprehensive medical, gynaecological, sexual and social histories as clinically appropriate.
  • Provide contraception and relevant STI treatments under appropriate Patient Group Directions, including first supply and re-issue, where authorised.
  • Provide appropriate health promotion, risk-reduction advice and support informed decision-making.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, including those relating to children and young people.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and contemporaneous clinical records in accordance with professional, organisational and information governance requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and partner organisations to provide an integrated and accessible sexual health service.
  • Participate in clinical audit, service evaluation, quality improvement and clinical governance activities.
  • Maintain professional competence through continuing professional development and undertake mandatory and role-specific training as required.
  • Work within professional scope of practice, recognising limitations and seeking appropriate advice or escalation when required.

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Experience of working in nurse-led clinical services.
  • Experience of delivering sexual health and/or contraception services.
  • Minimum 3 years’ post-registration experience at Band 5 or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance and quality improvement.
  • Understanding of the NMC Code and professional accountability.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a clinical caseload safely.
  • Ability to undertake comprehensive clinical assessment and make appropriate clinical decisions within scope of practice.
  • Good communication, interpersonal and consultation skills
  • Commitment to confidentiality, safeguarding and delivering safe, evidence-based care.
  • Level 3 Safeguarding training (Adults & Children).

Desirable

  • Post-registration qualification in contraception, e.g. Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (DFSRH) or equivalent.
  • GUM/sexual health qualification or recognised course, e.g. STIF, or willingness to complete within 6 months of appointment.
  • Nurse prescribing qualification.
  • Experience of working with young people.
  • Experience of working within an integrated sexual health service.
  • Knowledge and understanding of national guidance and policy relating to sexual health, contraception and the development of integrated sexual health services.
  • Competence in the use of Lilie or other electronic patient record systems.
  • Experience of clinical audit, quality improvement and service development.
