An established and growing business operating within the construction, infrastructure, testing and technical services sector is seeking an experienced Head of Sales to lead its national sales function.

This is a genuine player-manager opportunity, combining strategic sales leadership with hands-on responsibility for major customer relationships and key commercial opportunities. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will lead a team of Business Development Managers while shaping commercial strategy, driving profitable revenue growth, and improving sales performance across the business.

The Opportunity

This role has been created to provide dedicated leadership to a growing sales function and support the next phase of commercial development. You'll inherit responsibility for key strategic customer relationships while leading and developing a team of three Business Development Managers located across the UK. Alongside driving revenue growth, you'll play a key role in strengthening commercial disciplines around pricing, forecasting, account quality and profitability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sales Leadership
    • Lead, coach and develop a team of three geographically dispersed Business Development Managers.
    • Establish robust sales management processes including KPI reviews, one-to-ones, pipeline reviews and performance coaching.
    • Develop the commercial capability of team members transitioning from operational backgrounds into sales roles.
    • Create a culture of accountability, ownership and commercial awareness.
  • Commercial Growth & Strategy
    • Define and implement a sales strategy focused on profitable, sustainable growth.
    • Improve pricing discipline and commercial decision-making across the sales function.
    • Identify and target high-value sectors, customers, frameworks and market opportunities.
    • Enhance forecasting accuracy, pipeline management and reporting capability.
  • Strategic Account Management
    • Personally manage a portfolio of key strategic accounts.
    • Lead major bids, negotiations and complex commercial opportunities.
    • Develop long-term customer relationships that deliver sustainable growth and strong margins.
    • Take ownership of significant customer relationships and ensure successful account development.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership
    • Work closely with Operations, Finance and Technical teams to ensure growth is commercially sound and operationally deliverable.
    • Maintain clear visibility of commercial risks and opportunities.
    • Contribute to wider business strategy through strong commercial leadership.

About You

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience leading sales teams within construction, infrastructure, testing, engineering or related technical sectors.
  • Demonstrable track record of delivering revenue growth while improving commercial performance and margins.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience of pricing, profitability and contract management.
  • Experience managing strategic customer relationships and major commercial opportunities.
  • Proven ability to operate as a player-manager, balancing leadership responsibilities with personal sales activity.
  • Experience leading geographically dispersed teams.

Desirable Experience

  • Background within Testing, Inspection & Certification (TIC).
  • Experience within construction materials, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, geotechnical or civil engineering sectors.
  • Established a network within the infrastructure and construction markets.
  • Experience operating within a multi-site environment.
  • Strong coaching and people development capability.

Salary & Package

Basic Salary
Circa £65,000

Bonus Scheme
A highly attractive performance-based bonus structure designed to reward both personal and business success:

  • 30% OTE, paid quarterly
  • Two independent performance targets:
    • Individual account performance
    • Overall business sales performance
  • Targets are weighted towards overall business performance. Quarterly bonuses can be achieved against either target independently
  • 3% commission on revenue achieved above the annual target
