The General Ledger Clerk is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring the integrity of the general ledger. This role supports the finance team by processing journal entries, reconciling accounts, and assisting with month-end and year-end close activities. The General Ledger Clerk plays a crucial role in maintaining compliance with accounting standards and contributes to the organisation’s financial reporting processes

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Journal Entries: Prepare and post standard and adjusting journal entries for Spanish (S.A./S.L.) and Italian (S.r.l./S.p.A.) entities, ensuring correct account mapping under local statutory plans (PGC in Spain, OIC in Italy) and IFRS.
  • Reconciliations: Perform regular reconciliations of bank accounts, intercompany balances, and local tax control accounts (IVA, social security, withholding tax), investigating and resolving sub-ledger variances promptly.
  • Month-End & Year-End Close: Execute transactional closing procedures for Southern European entities, preparing accruals, prepayments, and statutory reserve entries according to group reporting schedules.
  • Financial Records Maintenance: Maintain organized, audit-ready ledger records and digital document archives adhering to Spanish (AEAT) and Italian (Agenzia delle Entrate) legal retention standards.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting Support: Compile balance sheet schedules, trial balance reconciliations, and preliminary profit-and-loss variance analyses to support management reporting and local statutory filings.
  • Compliance & Accuracy: Ensure all posted transactions comply with group accounting policies, IFRS, local statutory frameworks, and internal control matrices.
  • Process Improvements: Support the GL Manager in testing, refining, and automating ERP ledger workflows, sub-ledger posting rules, and localized financial reporting tools.
  • Collaboration with Finance Teams: Partner with local AP, AR, and Payroll functions to ensure accurate transaction flow, proper allocation of shared costs, and swift resolution of coding errors.
  • Audit Support: Prepare audit schedules, transaction detail extracts, and supporting documentation for internal auditors and local external audit teams.
  • Regulatory Awareness: Maintain a strong working knowledge of local statutory accounting updates and EU tax administration mandates to ensure ongoing posting compliance.

Requirements:

  • Familiarity with integrated systems (AP, AR, GL and Payroll)
  • Knowledge of office productivity tools (MS Office)
  • Exposure to automation tools (RPA bots etc.) beneficial
