We are seeking an experienced Design & Technical Manager to lead our clients growing street lighting design team.
The Design & Technical Manager plays a pivotal leadership role within our Local Authority Business team. The postholder is responsible for managing, mentoring, and motivating a small team of lighting design engineers and technicians while also overseeing the delivery of street lighting design work, ensuring technical excellence and compliance across all outputs. They will liaise with internal departments, clients, and external stakeholders to support the successful delivery of both standalone design commissions and wider street lighting installation or maintenance projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team & Project Management
- Line management responsibility for the lighting design team and team development.
- Programme and monitor team workload, ensuring delivery to quality, time, and budget expectations.
- Provide regular performance reporting and forecasting to senior management.
- Oversee external design and technical support services as required.
- Ensure all work complies with current lighting and electrical standards, codes of practice, and relevant legislation including CDM regulations.
- Produce lighting and electrical design estimates for internal and external clients for small to medium scale projects.
- Support the estimating department with tender input for larger-scale design, installation, and term maintenance contracts.
- Undertake and review street lighting designs using Lighting Reality. Electrical Design using AMTECH /Trimble.
- Prepare technical drawings using AutoCAD LT.
- Undertake lighting impact assessments, including night-time photometric testing when necessary.
- Carry out site surveys and assessments of existing highway infrastructure.
- Produce technical reports, specifications, and contract documentation.
- Maintain and champion compliance with our internal QMS procedures.
- Liaise with internal project managers and departments to provide technical input and resolve design-related matters.
- Interface with clients, consultants, and external stakeholders to build effective relationships and represent our design capabilities.
- Support the strategic development of the design function, contributing to business planning, resource allocation, and capability development.
- Keep abreast of industry best practices, technical innovations, and regulatory changes to ensure we remain at the forefront of the industry.
Essential Requirements:
- Significant experience in a relevant engineering or infrastructure environment.
- HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or a related subject.
- Knowledge of BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations and experience in underground cable network design.
- In-depth understanding of CDM regulations and risk management in design.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and design-related IT systems. Skilled in the use of Lighting Reality and AutoCAD LT.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationally.
Desirable:
- ILP Exterior Lighting Diploma and/or HEA Approved Persons Accreditation.
- Management or Project Management qualification or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW).
- Minimum 5 years experience in a team management role.
- Incorporated Engineer status or working towards membership of a recognised engineering institution.
