Contract Design Engineer
IR35 Status: Out / Full Time Contract
Location: Remote or Office Based (Carlton Park, Richmond DL11 7AF)
Join an established agricultural equipment supply business currently adding self-manufactured products to complement a line of imported goods, working with overseas partners to produce bespoke designs. The business produces general metal fabrication products, primarily steel and aluminium, including bespoke extrusions, welded and riveted assemblies, and components with nuts, bolts, and linkages. They are looking to fill product line gaps and improve design efficiency as they transition from importing to manufacturing.
To support the client’s shift towards in-house and overseas manufacturing, they require an experienced SolidWorks Design Engineer to create detailed production drawings for fabrication. The goal is to improve control of manufacturing processes, reduce delays, and ensure accuracy across all deliverables.
Responsibilities:
- Produce detailed SolidWorks 3D models and manufacturing/production drawings from sketches and design briefs
- Generate assembly drawings and technical documentation for fabrication
- Apply knowledge of steel and aluminium fabrication, weldments, rivets, nuts and bolts, and bespoke extrusions
- Assist in costing and process documentation using SolidWorks tools (MM laser cutting, welding, etc.)
- Liaise with team for design intent and ensure designs are compatible with Chinese fabrication standards
- Provide drawings suitable for translation and communication with overseas manufacturers
- Work independently with minimal supervision, delivering accurate and complete design outputs
Experiences required:
- Proven experience as a Design Engineer using SolidWorks (2025 preferred)
- Strong background in metal fabrication, steel and aluminium design, and manufacturing drawings
- Experience producing assembly and detailed technical drawings for production
- Ability to interpret conceptual sketches into accurate 3D models and detailed fabrication drawings
- Understanding of costing processes within SolidWorks
- Independent, diligent, and detail-oriented approach
- Knowledge of agricultural or livestock equipment preferred
