Contract Design Engineer – SolidWorks Status: Outside
Hourly – Circa 45 DOE
Contract Term – 3 months, potential for extension
Location – Barnet, In Office
We\’re excited to be partnering with a long-established engineering company with decades of experience supporting the global marine and industrial sectors. Specialising in reverse engineering, precision manufacturing, and component re-engineering, they deliver high-quality, technically robust solutions for complex rotating and reciprocating equipment such as compressors, pumps, and purifiers across the shipping, oil & gas, power generation, and related industries.
We\’re seeking an experienced Contract Design Engineer. You will be responsible for reverse-engineering a variety of mechanical components used in marine machinery.
What You\’ll Be Doing
- Reverse-engineering complex mechanical parts by producing accurate 3D CAD models and 2D production drawings using SolidWorks
- Creating and updating detailed component drawings from existing parts, including assemblies and exploded views where required
- Interpreting and redesigning components of marine reciprocating compressors, centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, and marine purifiers – such as pistons, cylinders, shafts, bearings, impellers, rotors, and couplings
- Analysing, reviewing, and improving legacy drawings, with a focus on engineering standards and accurate machining and fitting tolerances
- Designing new parts or assemblies using reference data from existing components, documentation, and technical specifications
- Applying sound knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, tolerancing standards (including GD&T), and marine equipment operation
- Considering manufacturing feasibility throughout the design process, including casting and machining practices
Experiences Required
- Strong 3D modelling and 2D drafting experience using SolidWorks, including application of GD&T
- Experience with FEA software, ideally SolidWorks Simulation, to assess load paths, stress concentrations, and material interaction
- Solid background in mechanical design or draughting for manufacture (DFM), ideally within marine, heavy machinery, or rotating equipment sectors
- Proven ability to reverse-engineer physical components into accurate CAD models and technical drawings
- Sound understanding of mechanical systems including compressors, pumps, purifiers, and their key components (e.g. pistons, impellers, shafts, gears, bearings)
- Experience working with cast and machined parts, and interpreting legacy drawings or historical technical documentation
