About the role

The Maritime Quality, Compliance & Training Consultant plays a dual role in regulatory assurance and professional development. The position combines technical consultancy—through audits, inspections, and compliance reviews—with the design and delivery of training programs that build maritime competency at both operational and corporate levels.

This role requires a balance of
regulatory expertise and training leadership
, enabling SMC\'s clients to improve operational safety, maintain international compliance, and strengthen their workforce through structured professional development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and conduct
    audits, inspections, and compliance surveys
    across vessels, ports, cargo operations, and inland waterways.
  • Evaluate adherence to UK and international regulatory frameworks, including
    ISM, ISPS, MLC 2006, SOLAS, MARPOL, and flag-state requirements
    .
  • Develop, implement, and oversee
    Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) systems
    in maritime operations.
  • Conduct
    root cause analysis, incident investigations, and risk assessments
    following non-conformities or audit findings.
  • Prepare clear and detailed compliance reports, supported by evidence-based recommendations for clients and authorities.
  • Manage
    Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA)
    processes to resolve compliance deficiencies and drive safety improvements.
  • Design and deliver
    maritime professional training programs
    , including:
  • Regulatory compliance awareness (ISM, ISPS, MLC, MARPOL, Polar Code)
  • Safety management systems, audits, and inspection readiness
  • Bridge/Engine Room resource management and operational best practices
  • Maritime leadership, crisis management, and corporate skill training
  • Blended and digital training through LMS/e-learning platforms
  • Act as SMC\'s
    quality, compliance, and training specialist
    in client projects, providing expert consultancy, tailored education, and workforce development solutions.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Master Mariner or Chief Mate license (STCW II/2).
  • Degree in Nautical Science, Maritime Studies, or related field.
  • Proven experience in
    maritime audits, inspections, and compliance
    under international standards (ISM, ISPS, MLC, MARPOL, SOLAS).
  • Strong background in
    professional training design and delivery
    , aligned with STCW and IMO requirements.
  • Knowledge of
    ISO 9001:2015 and quality management systems
    .
  • Skilled in
    risk assessments, CAPA, and incident investigation methodologies
    .
  • Excellent communication skills in both technical reporting and training delivery.
  • Integrity, client focus, and ability to adapt in dynamic global maritime environments.
  • Willingness to travel internationally for audits, consultancy, and training engagements.
