The Role

Lead the warehouse team during the shift to deliver the safe, accurate and efficient receipt, storage, movement, picking and despatch of stock.

Translate the daily plan into clear priorities, allocate people and equipment, monitor progress and take prompt action when performance, safety, quality or customer service is at risk.

  • Your Key Responsibilities
  • Start each shift with a clear plan, team brief and allocation of work based on volume, skills, risk and customer priorities.
  • Monitor progress throughout the shift, balance labour between activities and expedite material risks or resource gaps early.
  • Maintain an effective shift handover covering safety, service, stock, equipment, staffing and outstanding actions.
  • Provide visible leadership on the warehouse floor and ensure agreed standards are applied consistently.
  • Health safety and compliance
  • Ensure the team follows risk assessments, safe systems of work, traffic‑management rules, PPE requirements and MHE controls at all times.
  • Complete required safety checks and report incidents, near misses, hazards and equipment defects promptly; support investigations and corrective actions.
  • Maintain food safety, hygiene, allergen, temperature‑control, security and environmental standards relevant to the operation.
  • Stop or isolate unsafe work and accelerate any condition that could harm people, product, equipment or the environment.
  • Warehouse operations and customer service
  • Coordinate inbound, put‑away, replenishment, picking, loading and despatch activities to meet the daily plan and collection times.
  • Ensure the correct product, quantity, date code, location, label and status are used at every stage of the process.
  • Work closely with transport, planning, stock control, quality and production teams to resolve constraints and protect customer service.
  • Manage priorities during disruption while maintaining safe working practices, product integrity and accurate system transactions.
  • Stock accuracy and systems
  • Ensure all stock movements are scanned and recorded accurately and in real time through the approved warehouse systems.
  • Apply FEFO, traceability, quarantine and stock‑status controls; prevent unapproved or unidentified stock from entering the process.
  • Support cycle counts and stock takes, investigate variances and implement corrective actions to prevent repeat errors.
  • Report and control damaged, short, over, mixed or incorrectly labelled stock in line with site procedures.
  • People performance and development
  • Set clear expectations, give timely feedback and coach team members to improve safety, quality, productivity and accuracy.
  • Confirm colleagues are trained, authorised and competent before allocating tasks; maintain accurate training and skills records.
  • Manage day‑to‑day attendance, conduct and performance concerns in line with company policy, involving the Warehouse Manager and People team as required.
  • Promote fair treatment, teamwork, inclusion and respectful behaviour across the shift, including agency and temporary colleagues.
  • Equipment workplace and continuous improvement
  • Allocate MHE, RF scanners and other equipment safely and effectively; complete checks and remove defective equipment from service.
  • Maintain strong housekeeping, gangway, pedestrian‑route, dock, racking and storage standards throughout the shift.
  • Review KPI results and recurring problems, contribute to root‑cause investigations and implement agreed improvements.
  • Control consumables and avoidable waste, and support reasonable projects, audits and cover requirements assigned by management.
  • The Ideal Candidate
  • Experience leading or supervising a team in a warehouse, distribution or manufacturing environment — team leadership
  • Experience in chilled or frozen food logistics — chilled logistics
  • Practical understanding of warehouse safety, safe systems of work and incident reporting — warehouse safety
  • IOSH or equivalent safety qualification; food safety training — IOSH qualification
  • Confident using warehouse systems, RF equipment and Microsoft applications; understands stock control and traceability — warehouse systems
  • Experience with cycle counting, FEFO and investigation of stock variances — cycle counting
  • Able to allocate work, set standards, coach colleagues and address performance or conduct concerns fairly — people leadership
  • Experience supporting attendance, investigations or formal people processes — people processes
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including shift briefs, handovers and escalation of risk — shift communication
  • Experience working with transport, planning, quality and stock‑control teams — cross‑functional working
  • Organised, numerate and calm under pressure; able to reprioritise safely as demand changes — operational capability
  • Current MHE licence or train‑the‑trainer qualification — MHE licence
  • Able to work the required shift pattern and operate in temperature‑controlled warehouse areas — shift patterns
  • Flexible to provide reasonable cover across shifts when required — shift cover
