Job Introduction
Keep a major NHS hospital running – and be home on time. If you’re an experienced Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Fitter looking for a stable, meaningful role where your skills genuinely matter, this could be your next move. At Wythenshawe Hospital, part of one of the UK’s busiest acute hospital sites, our Estates team plays a vital role in patient care. Every boiler, ventilation system and chilled water circuit you maintain directly supports clinical services and patient safety. This is not a construction site or short‑term contract. It’s a long‑term, secure role in a critical healthcare environment, with set weekday hours, strong support, and real development opportunities.
The role
You’ll join a skilled, multi‑disciplinary Estates team delivering Hard FM services across the Wythenshawe Hospital site. Working alongside other engineers, supervisors and healthcare teams, you’ll carry out a mix of planned and reactive mechanical maintenance, ensuring systems remain safe, compliant and reliable. Your work will cover:
- Heating, ventilation and chilled water systems
- Mechanical plant and associated equipment
- Building Management Systems (BMS)
- General mechanical and minor building repairs where required
No two days are the same – but you’ll always know your work makes a difference.
What you’ll be doing
- Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and statutory inspections
- Responding to reactive breakdowns and fault‑finding across mechanical and HVAC systems
- Completing repairs, installations and improvements to plant and equipment
- Working under mechanical permit systems and NHS health & safety standards
- Supporting fast, effective responses to critical issues
- Taking part in the on‑call rota (with additional pay)
- Occasionally working at height and driving company vehicles as required
What we’re looking for
- NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering (essential)
- Proven experience in a mechanical maintenance or fitter role
- Strong knowledge of heating, ventilation and mechanical systems
- Confidence diagnosing faults and carrying out effective repairs
- A good working knowledge of health & safety regulations
- A practical, reliable approach and the ability to work independently or as part of a team
Experience in healthcare or large, complex sites is an advantage – but not essential.
What you’ll get in return
- Circa £36,500 salary, plus overtime and on‑call payments
- Monday–Friday working with predictable hours
- Full training, PPE and protective uniform provided
- Access to Sodexo Rewards and discount schemes
- Blue Light Card discounts
- 24/7 mental health, wellbeing and virtual GP support
- Employee Assistance Programme (legal, financial and personal support)
- Pension scheme and life assurance
- Clear opportunities for training, upskilling and career progression
- A supportive team environment in a critical NHS setting
