Make a difference. Build futures. Change lives.

At HMP Peterborough, we believe that education, skills and meaningful employment can play a vital role in rehabilitation and creating positive futures.

We’re looking for a passionate and motivated Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) Tutor to join our Education, Skills and Work team. This is an opportunity to work directly with prisoners at the beginning of their journey, helping them understand their strengths, identify opportunities and create realistic goals for education, skills, employment and resettlement.

As an IAG Tutor, you’ll be one of the first people many prisoners meet when they arrive at HMP Peterborough. Your support can help them take those important first steps towards positive change.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll provide high-quality information, advice and guidance through a combination of one-to-one support and group work.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Completing CIAG induction assessments, including Maths, English and ICT.
  • Completing and maintaining each prisoner's Personal Learning Plan (PLP) at induction.
  • Ensuring PLPs and associated records are accurate, up to date and uploaded correctly.
  • Supporting prisoners to develop realistic career and learning plans focused on achievement and resettlement.
  • Advising prisoners on education, skills, training and employment opportunities.
  • Helping individuals understand the qualifications and skills required to achieve their chosen career pathway.
  • Working one-to-one and in groups to develop skills, confidence and motivation.
  • Identifying and helping individuals overcome barriers to learning and progression.
  • Working collaboratively with education, skills, work, Neurodiversity & Inclusion and wider prison teams.
  • Supporting prisoners to establish meaningful SMART goals and clear pathways towards release and employment.
  • Maintaining accurate records and working within relevant policies, procedures and legal requirements.

What we’re looking for

You’ll be someone who genuinely wants to help others progress. You’ll have the ability to build positive relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, while maintaining professional boundaries and working effectively in a challenging environment.

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Confident using IT, including Microsoft Teams and Excel.
  • Organised and able to manage competing priorities.
  • Comfortable working under pressure and meeting deadlines.
  • Flexible, responsive and able to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • A strong communicator who can work effectively with individuals and groups.
  • Resilient, patient and committed to achieving positive outcomes.
  • Able to work collaboratively with colleagues and partner teams.
  • Focused on delivering results and continually improving the service.

It would be advantageous if you have:

  • A Level 4 Careers Information, Advice and Guidance (CIAG) qualification.
  • Previous experience working in a careers, information, advice and guidance environment.
  • Experience within an education or custodial setting.
  • Knowledge or understanding of prison regimes.

Don't worry if you don't have every desirable qualification or experience. What matters most is your ability to engage people, identify their potential and support them to take positive steps forward.

Why HMP Peterborough?
